Hi everyone,
By next month, we are going to setup ISP(internet service provider) on our digital cable tv system as added feature/service. We need your advice and recommendations, if ClearOS is capable of handling as Router, DHCP, NAT and many other functions that are required in this kind of business. We are expecting to have more than 10,000 subscribers.
We are planning to buy your hardware the rack mount design. But we want to ask,
1. Is the OS capable of assigning/limiting bandwidth to our subscribers/clients?
2. Does it has GUI interface to manage the subscribers? Like automatic disconnection, prepaid account disconnection. We have this kind of software in our Cable it is called SMS(Subscribers Management System). Does this kind of software exist in ClearOS or any other third party software and where can we buy this software that we can integrate to our system.
3. With your hardware how many clients it can support?
4. Regarding your technical support, do you have technical personnel also assigned here in the Philippines.
We already made contacts with ARRIS to buy the ARRIS C3 CMTS Cable modem. Need your help if ClearOS can work with this kind of modem. And what can it help?
Thanks,
Tishri Clarin

Yo I never setup a CMTS I jsut know about the security of DOCSIS and I can help give pointers.
Like look up BPI+ because DOCSIS just by itself is a weakly secured standard.
EDIT: I also got to thinking. With DOCSIS the modems are provisioned based on their mac address. So a modem that's not supposed to be on the network will not be able to get on and you can set speed and what not via config files. So lets say one person went over their bandwidth you can set it to send another config down that either has a slower speed or have it disable the network access. -

YO man so yah looking to do DOCSIS? If so I'm pretty good at my way around DOCSIS. It's sort of a hobby for me hahaa.
I personally don't think clearos was made to be the provisioning server for this type of application. IT might work if yah mod it heavily but why not just talk with arris some? Maybe they can give some suggestions on whats the best/easiest route. Not anything against clearos tho just saying t might not be 100% the best for this. -

Hi tishri,
You are welcome.
Sure ... when money is not a problem, you could buy Cisco routers & switches and when it is, you could chose for one of the cheaper alternatives like LinkSys (one of the consumer brands of Cisco).
The point I am trying to make is that it's your choice.
In general, you won't improve on security, stability and endurance with expensive hardware.
ClearOS is free, so if you have no experience with it, you can test it and learn how it works.
If you would still like to buy expensive stuff after you learned the basics, you could still do that.

Thank you for the immediate response. If you don't mind guys, if I would use CISCO routers and firewalls for my ISP. Which is better CISCO or use a linux firewall/router like ISPConfig or ClearOS? I know CISCO is a lot expensive but can we defeat this kind of equipments in terms of performance?
Thanks -

I would suggest that you install ISPConfig to manage your users and bandwidth, etc. It is available at http://www.ispconfig.org/index.htm
Hope this helps. -

Hi tishri,
ClearOS is capable as Router, DHCP, NAT and many other functions:
ClearOS Overview
[ol]- 1. Yes, but not per Internet client:
Port Ranges in the Bandwidth Rules
Bandwidth User Guide
- 2. Not for AFAIK. You will need 3rd party software for that based on PHP and MySQL.
I don't know what or where to buy, but maybe you can Create a new Module (not required when using 3rd party software)
- 3. LAN clients:
Approximately 200, but according to a few threads in this forum probably even more.
Internet clients:
Probably as much as you like, depending on the database actions required for 10.000+ subscribers in combination with the hardware specifications and the available bandwidth:
Sloowww web site - hope to improve performance
- 4. Not sure, but maybe this will guide you in the right direction:

I can't predict if your "ARRIS C3 CMTS" cable modem will give you any trouble. As long as it's not a USB stick modem, I don't suspect any problems.
The most important for me would be, to check if you are able to bridge it, otherwise how to create a virtual server on it, to bypass the internal router, so you will be able to take full advantage of the ClearOS box capabilities.
Good luck,
John - 1. Yes, but not per Internet client:
