Hey there,
I'm trying (desperately by now) to install ClearOS 6.7 on the mini PC ZOTAC ZBOX CI321 nano.
So far I even tried the ClearOS 7.1, but the same error occurred.

I come as far as the option where I choose the HDD (in my case an SSD) / Partition where to install the OS.
The Installer then says:
Unable to read group information from repositories. This is a problem with the generation of your install tree.

I tried creating the USB Stick with LiLi USB Creator and unetinboot. Always without errors.
I tried several .iso's and different version (6.7/7.1) as well.

The Zotac Box does not have a DVD Drive, so USB Install is the only way to go^^

Do you have any idea what I might check / what might be the issue over here?

Any help is appreciated!!

thanks alot

I created the USB from the iso with rufus, never had any problems with this. The error comes after selecting the drive to install and running through the partition process

    Hello

    Sorry for my late response.
I did install 6.6.1 version from USB stick from the link that Nick posted, thank you ;) I also did have a DVD for backup if USB wouldn't work ;)
ClearOS updated to version 6.9 and Bandwidth Manager is working now like it should ;) :D

I hope that they will extend the EoL of 6.9 version, or even better, that they will add this Bandwidth Manager to the new 8.x ClearOS :)

Thank you both for the help

You may be in luck with the EoL on 6.x. Centos has pushed theirs out to Nov 2020 so ours could be subject to review.

Re Bandwidth, it sucks for you (and a few others), but it is way better for things like VoIP. Also, it does not give any hard limits and allows anyone to take all the bandwidth if it is not being used.

    Hello

Thank you both for the help. I'm currently away, so I will try to install 6.x when I come back in about a week.
Yes Tony will borrow a DVD unit and try this way ;) I didn't need a CD/DVD unit for ages :)
If I understand this right, whatever version of 6.x I install, it will automatically update to version 6.9?

@Dave Suggestion for ClearOS 8? PLEASE bring back OLD Bandwidth Manager, the new one sucks ;) :p

Thanks Dave - that explains the delay with 6.10 - but in no way does it explain the lack of love and attention prier to 6.10. It must be a difficult bug or lack of sufficient resources to take over six months to resolve, hope you get it fixed.. Why no release notes for v6.9... no DVD for v6.9...

    Tony,

There is a specific security bug being fixed involved that is holding things up. I'm not going to go into details but we are withholding releases until it is resolved. We are keenly aware that updates are slow and are working to resolve the issue so things can get back to normal. As for the EOL for 6, our link that Nick shared is accurate still but we may extend 6 or push security patches if deemed necessary. That being said, our goal is to also produce a DVD sometime this quarter for 6.x so that we have a more recent media for 6.x... a sort of last hurrah before it goes EOL.

We are also working on ClearOS 8 topics as well. If you have suggestions for 8, let us know what they are. I will start a thread on that topic so we can better gauge community interest.

Thanks for that correction Nick - wonder why those I checked just had empty directories whereas the 7.x ones were populated? Hit a maintenance window? Anyway went back and can now see files... Sorry for any confusion created.

Just powered up the dual boot CentOS system and booted into ClearSO 6.x. See that now have to go all the way to mirror1-sanfrancisco.clearos.com for clearos closest 6.x mirror... a handful of updates in well over 4 1/2 months, not all security related, since this machine was last booted into 6.x. I find it difficult to believe that there are virtually no security updates required in all that time...

Checking my My registration shows the following :- What?

    Status Registered
    Account zzzzzzz
    System Name yyyyyy
    External Hostname/IP vvvvvvv.poweredbyclear.com
    Hostkey xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
    Software End-of-Life March 1, 2018

Downloading http://mirror1-sanfrancisco.clearos.com/clearos/community/6/updates/ file and sorting indicates the last update appears to be "2018-05-28 18:56" The kernel in updates is still at 2.6.32-696.30.1.v6.x86_64.rpm dated 2018-05-24 16:56

Did I miss the announcement of 6.10 Beta test? - on this mirror all of 6.10 still seems to be sitting stagnant in http://mirror1-sanfrancisco.clearos.com/clearos/community/6/updates-testing/x86_64/RPMS/ with the latest I could find being kernel-2.6.32-754.6.3.v6.x86_64.rpm 2018-10-25 04:57 -- from sorting the downloaded file using wget... CentOS 6.x is currently at kernel-2.6.32-754.10.1.el6.x86_64.rpm - CentOS 6.10 was released on 3 Jul 2018 - over 6 months ago...

Is this mirror typical? - if so - I would not call this 6.x support - rather something akin to abandonware :p - probably demand doesn't justify the effort required... So even if is still available - does it justify the status of "supported".. and again what happened to 6.10?

There is no information regarding ClearOS 6.9 at Release Notes - let alone v 6.10

Legacy Editions shows 6.x ending as soon as it hits 2019... ClearOS 6.x was released early 2012 if my memory is correct - so the "year line" would seem to indicate the beginning of the year... but maybe this is just an artists dream to give a vague idea... why not precise dates and inform people so they know exactly where they stand?

6.x has been removed from downloads Dowloads and consigned to "legacy". other companies tend to use legacy to indicate "done and dusted" in my experience...

Anyway - good luck to you Flash - looks like you are in business - enjoy setting up tftp and pxeboot... or just beg, borrow or purloin a DVD drive :) it doesn't have to be installed in the case - just open up the case and install a SATA cable and find a spare power cable - this is what happens here. Then just power down - disconnect the DVD and button up the case...

After all that, exploring Clearcenter's servers and doing some very slow downloads, I've just found 6.6.1 on the mirrors here. The pxe stuff is in os/ and the iso in iso/.

6.x is certainly still alive. Check the repos here. Mirror1-newyork is the primary mirror. You can only download 6.7, but it will update to 6.9 either with yum or if you let it run overnight. The downside of 6.x is that it goes end of life this September. If you go into the os folder there is something to do with pxe. A user, John had a pxe thread on the forum, except for the catch 22 that is was how to use ClearOS as the pxe server for lots of different OS's. There is also a pxe howto but it was for 5.x.

I'll see if I can hunt down anything to do with 6.6.1.

Do you maybe have a link to 6.6.1

As mentioned in my previous append ClearOS 6.x is kaputt, gone, être capot. No longer exists in the ClearOS repositories on the ClearOS mirrors I checked... the 6.x directories are empty. The only 6.x .iso here are 6.5, 6.6 and 6.7 - and they are about to be trashed...

If you want to continue to torture yourself, then the only suggestion I can make, assuming your onboard NIC supports booting off the LAN is to set-up a tftp server with pxeboot. I believe the ClearOS 6.7 .iso has the necessary pxeboot files... no warranty :p

I did this to install lubuntu on an old Toshiba laptop. The DVD driver was broken and the BIOS did not support any form of USB booting - but it had provision to boot from the LAN using the onboard NIC. So, using information gleaned from the internet, set-up one of my ClearOS 7.5 machines with tftp and all the necessary files and images. Worked a treat and now enjoy lubuntu on that machine...

In my case it was made easier as I ditch dnsmasg and use dhcpd from ISC and bind (named). Dnsmasq is useless for the requirements here. There were many more instructions for setting up tftp and pxeboot using dhcpd, but did notice some mentioning dnsmasq. Didn't follow them, of course, so no clue as to what is needed to be done...

The other option, if the present ClearOS doesn't provide the needed functionality, is to look elsewhere and find something that does...

Edit: Downloaded the manual for your machine and see that you can enable the Onboard LAN Boot ROM and select the Legacy LAN option - so install over the LAN should be possible.

Surprised you don't have a SATA DVD lying around to use to. All my relatives and friends know I will take any discarded equipment in any condition (even if I see it is useless - but encourages them to continue). Latest acquisitions are a Lenovo ThinkCentre Desktop and Lenovo T410 Laptop for free... both in excellent condition. Also picked up some gems from items discarded beside the street awaiting the monthly council clean-up collection. Amazing what people throw out...

Just checked - a new SATA DVD drive is $19 AU here in Australia from local shops - small price to pay since you are so desperate... Ebay has some a few dollars less and free postage from suppliers within Australia. No idea where you are...

@ Nick I won't be doing that for now, maybe later, thanks for the tip.

    @ Tony
Do you maybe have a link to 6.6.1?
What about version 6.8 and 6.9, can they be installed with USB?

The only reason I use ClearOS is because the old Bandwidth Manager. It's perfect for what I need. It has worked perfect in ClearOS5.2 and if I remember it right I even used it even before it was ClearOS, ClarkConnect if I remember it right.

I don't know why developers ditched the old Bandwidth Manager and it no longer works in version 7. Why remove something that works and people use??

When I run os-prober, it only finds the old version of ClearOS, but not Windows, don't know why is that.

    Thank you

Flash, IMHO you are banging your head against a brick wall :(

Here is an extract from the 6.7 release notes....

The ISO version of 6.7 is intended for DVD and virtual environments and is not suitable for USB install. If you need to install via USB, please use the 6.6.1 ISO here and run 'yum update' after install.

However, since ClearOS 6.x is no longer supported - there is now no way to install 6.6.1 and upgrade with yum as all the 6.x repositories as far as I am aware are now empty. From memory 6.7 was released late 2015 - so even if you install from DVD you would miss out on all the security updates since then. Not my cup of tea to install that old an OS to use as my firewall and defence, however much I liked one particular component of it... Even worse if you happen to find an old copy of 6.1.1 - that stems from about 2011 and is even more vulnerable...

As for os-prober - two examples...

    [root@sandra ~]# os-prober
    /dev/sda1:Windows 10:Windows:chain

    [root@yenny ~]# cat /etc/clearos-release
    ClearOS release 7.5.0 (Final)
    [root@yenny ~]# os-prober
    /dev/sda2:ClearOS Community release 6.10.0 (Final):RedHat:linux

ClearOS 6.10 was in test - that's the reason i had it, don't think many people installed it... Was an upgrade using the test repositories from ClearOS 6.9.

Can I say that, while transferring an HDD between machines is generally pretty reliable (as long as the BIOS/UEFI boot is the same) there is one nasty gotcha which can be hard to diagnose. Generally the NIC names will change and will leave behind orphaned ifcfg-* files in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts. If one of those is configured with the same IP addresses as one of the new NICs, then you will get issues. This can happen with any NIC configured with a static IP (LAN interfaces come to mind most). If this happens, you'll have networkng problems. The best thing to do is to delete these orphaned files.

It's a little bit old PC. Motherboard is Gigabyte GA-H61M-S2PV, CPU is Intel Celeron 2.4 GHz I think.

I'm trying to install ClearOS 6.7. With USB stick. I used Rufus tool for the iso file.
I have successfully installed ClearOS 7.5, with no problems. But I need OLD Bandwidth Manager, and ClearOS 7 doesn't support it. That's why I'm trying to install 6.7 version. I couldn't find other versions like 6.8 or 6.9.

Strange, when I run "os-prober" it doesn't find Windows... :o

Flash - it would help if you gave more information...

Machine type and model, or motherboard make and model? CPU details
Which Version of ClearOS are your trying to install?
UEFI or legacy BIOS etc etc

How are you trying to install... type of media? how prepared, etc.

My suggestion was to avoid a potential problem with the Zotac machine by using another that doesn't have the same restriction. If you get the same error on multiple machines, then would suggest you are doing something incorrect -- hence the request for more information...

I have three machines that will dual boot between Windows and Linux...

    1. Install Windows - leave, or shrink, so there is enough space for ClearOS
    2. Install ClearOS
    a. Do custom partitioning - so as not to clobber Windows
    b. Make sure you have a /boot partition and make that bootable
    c. Configure ClearOS and get it running properly
machine should boot into ClearOS from restart, power-up
    3. Run "os-prober" from ClearOS command line to find Windows
Run "grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub2/grub.cfg" to add Windows to Grub menu

Then when you restart/boot machine you can select ClearOS or Windows from the grub menu... The same technique can be used, for example, have both ClearOS 6.9 and ClearOS 7.5 installed on the same machine and choose which to run (done that in the past)...

Edit: Actually it was dual boot into ClearOS 6.10 as I just discovered when the machine was powered up just now... bit flips in memory :)

Forgot to mention, I also have a Windows partition on that SSD, so I can't delete the boot sector, or can I?

@Tony No, I forgot to mention, I don't have a Zotac. I just get the same error massage.

So if I install ClearsOS6 on another machine and then move the SSD in this machine that I get the error massage, it will work?

Does your model have the same issue as the Zotac ZBOX PI320 ? Check this...

Do you have another machine with a compatible SATA port (i.e. uses the same SATA disk driver as the Zotac) - more than likely ahci... If so, you could try installing a basic ClearOS on the other machine - then move the disk to the Zotac. You would need to reconfigure the NICs. Moved Fedora, CentOS and ClearOS boot disks between machines here several times successfully... linux is much more forgiving doing this than Windows.

Think your board might be using Realtek NICs - if you get it running check, and if they are RTL8111/8168/8411 PCI Express Gigabit - then be sure to check in these forums how to obtain the correct driver so they operate reliably.

I don't know the answer to this one at all. Googling the error gives quite a few hits. I'd start by deleting the boot sector of the HDD if it has been used at all. I'd also look in the BIOS to see what alternative options it has for USB devices.

It is possible to do a net install but I don't know how. The sources are here for ClearOS7, but I can't find a ClearOS6 source. I'll have to ask, if I remember.
