Would suggest the 32-bit version of ClearOS 6.x if you are low in memory and an old CPU...

Thank you Tony for your reply. I haven't looked at the laptop today but after looking at the requirements I think it may not meet them. I know it has AMD cpu and I doubt it is Athlon or newer. I could probably install version 6?

A few more details might help... such as...

Manufacturer and Model of the Laptop?
    Which AMD CPU?
    How much memory?
Disk using MBR or GPT? etc

What installation method are you using?
Have you verified the installation media download with the check sum on the web-site?
    e.g. https://www.clearcenter.com/products/z-clearos-7-community

Do you meet the installation requirements?
    https://www.clearos.com/resources/documentation/clearos/content:en_us:7_b_system_requirements

    Edit: One more question...
Native or as a guest in some kind of VM with a host OS?
