You can achieve quite a lot with the folder structures, but not from the ClearOS console. The ClearOS webconfig only supports sharing a folder structure by user or group. It does no let you have a different level of access for different folders within the structure. You'll need to learn how to configure Samba manually and understand Linux file permissions to achieve much more.

All users, by default, get their own home folder which you can enable or disable through ClearOS. Would your wife be able to use that rather than a subfolder of /public?

For your child it may be harder. Where is your folder which you want her to be able to see?

I don't know on the web access side of things as I don't use web controls but I'd guess it is possible. If your child wants facebook access, it may be easier to grant it to everyone even if they don't use it.

Limiting .exe installations is a Windows group policy issue and I don't know how that is centrally managed even from a Windows server.

I'm using also the file sharing for windows and this works great. If you want to login on different computers as same user you need roaming profiles and thus domain server. For home this to me a little bit overkill.
Furter is the content filter handy but not essential, but the proxy and firewall are.

ClearOS is an easy package for even non-experience people and worka great in home enviroment.

You don't need to run a full Domain Controller. Windows Networking can also be configured in simple file sharing mode which is what I use.

Why do you want Windows Server as well? You can do file sharing and e-mail sharing with ClearOS.

I don't use web filtering (the content filter) but you can if you want.

ClearOS is a file server if you set up the Windows Networking. You then get access to what it calls flexshares or you can configure samba manually.
