Registrant Verification and ICANN

To quote from Wikipedia, ICANN is:

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers is a nonprofit organization that coordinates the Internet's global domain name system.

In January, 2014, ICANN implemented policy requiring registrars to enforce tactics meant to keep WHOIS contact information up-to-date. ClearCenter (via OpenSRS as a technical partner proxy) has no choice but to follow these regulations, regardless of the heavy-handed nature in which they are being enforced (see below).

Domain Suspension

How do I know my domain has been suspended?

If you suddenly are at a loss as to why your email is no longer functioning or you are receiving calls that your website is not working, chances are good that your domain is under suspension. To verify this, in either a Windows command line mode or from any ClearOS server (logged in to a shell), type:

dig YOUR_DOMAIN ns

To pull the DNS records. If you do not see an answer section that displays ClearCenter's (or your custom DNS) nameserver records, your domain has been suspended.

Example of a *non-suspended* domain's Nameserver record:

;; ANSWER SECTION:
clearcenter.com. 21599	IN	NS	ns1.clearsdn.com.
clearcenter.com. 21599	IN	NS	ns2.clearsdn.com.
clearcenter.com. 21599	IN	NS	ns3.clearsdn.com.
clearcenter.com. 21599	IN	NS	ns4.clearsdn.com.

Removing a Domain From Suspension

If you have confirmed your domain is likely under an ICANN suspension, follow the steps below to remove the suspension an re-activate the nameserver records.

1. Login to the ClearCenter portal where your domain is being managed.

2. Navigate to DNS –> Dns/Domain Summary and click on the “View” link next to the domain under suspension.

View

3. Click on the WHOIS link to send you to the WHOIS management interface

4. Click on the “Admin” link to update admin properties

5. Update your Email Address and click “Save Configuration”

6. Wait for an email to come to your inbox. Follow the instructions contained within (requiring you to click on a link that will take you to a form where you need to verify your information).

7. Wait 5 minutes after you have completed the verification process. Your nameserver records will automatically come online and your domain will be fully functional. Nothing else do do.

Prevention is the Best Protection

What can you do to ensure your domain or client's domains are not subject to suspension? Make sure to the WHOIS contact information up to date. Respond promptly to the email verification sent out by ClearCenter via our registrar partner, OpenSRS. The email sent to you requiring action (eg. clicking on link and confirming information) will look similar to the following:

From: "ClearCenter"
To: your@email.address
Subject: VERIFICATION REQUIRED - Please verify your domain name(s) as soon as possible

** Please note: failure to complete the process outlined below will lead
to the suspension of your domain name. **

Greetings,

Recently you registered, transferred or modified the contact information
for one or more of your domain name(s). As of January 1, 2014, ICANN
requires all accredited registrars to validate your new contact information.

You can read about ICANN's new policy at:

http://www.icann.org/en/resources/registrars/raa/approved-with-specs-27jun13-en.htm#whois-accuracy.

The following domain names will be suspended in 2 days:

  domain1.com
  domain2.com

You will have also received this notice if we could not successfully deliver
a WHOIS Data Reminder Policy (WDRP) email or a renewal reminder notice.

In order to ensure your domain name(s) remain active, you must now click
the following link and follow the instructions provided:

Failure to follow the above link and complete this process will eventually
lead to the suspension of your domain name(s).

If you have any questions, please contact us.

Sincerely,

ClearCenter

FAQ

Which TLDs does this process apply to?

The validation process applies to all gTLDs. This also includes the new gTLDs.

What change will trigger the validation process for an existing domain?

Any change to the First name, Last name, or Email address will trigger the validation process, unless it was previously validated.

If the WDRP or ERRP (Day 30 and Day 5 Renewal Notices) bounce, the domain will enter the validation process.

My domain is suspended due to a bounced WDRP or ERRP notice so I can't receive the validation email. What do I do?

A: You should login to the ClearCenter Portal and navigate to “DNS –> DNS/Domain Summary”. Click on “View” next to the domain that has been suspended, then click on the WHOIS link. Update your admin email address. This will trigger the validation process if necessary.

How do I know someone's not trying to scam me?

Feel free to contact sales@clearcenter.com or call +1.801.851.5555 if you have any questions about emails you receive around domain registrant verification that you are suspicious of.

How long do I have before my domain is suspended?

The process takes 15 days from the time of the first verification event. See the image below for more information.

Timeline

How long will it take for my domain to come back online after I validate my information?

Your domain should come back online almost instantly (within 5 minutes).

If a domain is suspended, will it still auto-renew?

Yes it will.
