Toastyduck replied to a discussion, Samba service refusing to start

Hey Nick, just wanted to let you know that it appears to be fixed. I just had to setup a new password for the Samba manager account. Thank you very much for taking the time to help out today.

    Hi Nick,

Thank you very much for the reply. The odd thing is that I just installed directory server yesterday. I'm pretty sure that I was using OpenLDAP earlier, but it doesn't seem to be in marketplace to install. So I've rebooted the machine a few times just hoping that something will fix itself when it boots, but it should come at no surprise that it's not working. I really don't want to re-install ClearOS again as I just did that a few months ago and things were finally working again without any issues.

Any guidance on reinstalling OpenLDAP would be greatly appreciated.

Something to note, is that I also installed: Password Policies which may have broken my passwords as I'm also unable to login to my radius server either... It also looks like there isn't a way to uninstall or disable this feature.

    Samba service refusing to start

Hi, I'm looking for a bit of help with my Clearos install. I recently installed a few various items from the marketplace, however after using the new features for a bit I decided to uninstall them as they weren't working as I was hoping. These include:

    2FA for Webconfig
    Directory Server

After uninstalling these I've noticed that Samba is now refusing to start. When I click the start button from within the UI I receive no error message, it just doesn't start. I've ran the command "service smb status" and the results are below:

    Server Version: 7.5

    ● smb.service - Samba SMB Daemon
Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/system/smb.service; enabled; vendor preset: disabled)
Active: failed (Result: exit-code) since Fri 2018-12-07 13:54:12 CST; 5min ago

    Dec 07 13:54:12 systemd[1]: Unit smb.service entered failed state.
    Dec 07 13:54:12 systemd[1]: smb.service failed.

It appears that it's a password issue. Which password needs to be corrected and how would I correct this? The root password hasn't been changed and I can still successfully login via ssh and the UI.

Note: the server name has been replaced with for privacy.

    Thank you,

  • Hey Nick, than you for the reply. You're correct I'm opting for option #2 with the setup. I just reinstalled raspbian again and we will see how things work this time. Hopefully things work for more than just 24/48 hours, as pi-hole is truly amazing.Gotta love a LAN wide ad blocker.

  • Problems adding a pi-hole server to my network

    Hi everyone,

I'm looking for a bit of advice/help from the community. I ran across an awesome little project called pi-hole which can be located at The issue that I'm running in to, is that pi-hole will work perfectly for about 24 hours after the initial install. Then suddenly the pi is unable to access the internet. Heck, it is also unable to ping any device on my LAN either, even though I'm able to ssh into the box. So my question regarding ClearOS, is I know that we can change which DNS server we use on the Network > IP Settings page. I do this and it works great for the 24 hours. I know that ClearOS also includes a DNS server, is there anything that I need to do to the ClearOS box to get this to work correctly. I know that you're unable to have 2 DHCP servers on the same LAN, I'm guessing that having multiple DNS servers on the LAN is causing this issue. Any help with this would be amazing, as the support forums for pi-hole seem to be overrun by Linux trolls that are unwilling to help.

    Thank you

  • Thank you Nick, I will check it out.

  • Looking for some help with the Greylisting feature

Hey everyone, while I love using the greylisting feature due to the INSANE amount of spam that I receive. I find that legit emails sometimes get blocked as well. What can I do to white list specific email addresses so that they are never greylisted? I've been using just the default settings of:

    Delay: 5 mins
    Retention Time: 35 days

Any help on this one would be fantastic, because there's nothing like the in laws saying "Hey you didn't reply to my email, why not"...

    Thank you

Hey Nick, I went the separate NIC's route and not the vlans. I'm thinking that I may have to go the vlans route. So basically what I would like to do is isolate a few pc's so that they are on a different network.
