as an addendum ... while I was busy trying to create new certificates, in my ignorance I also included a passphrase to make them more secure. This also broke the Apache server, and is possibly the reason behind some of the issues, and prevents the web server from restarting after a reboot. Then it is necessary to first kill the process listening on port 80, start the web server, enter the passphrase and then the web server starts.
netstat -ltnp | grep ':80'
tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:80 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN 3453/httpd
kill -9 3453
service httpd start
Starting httpd: Apache/2.2.15 mod_ssl/2.2.15 (Pass Phrase Dialog)
