I am thinking about using ClearO 6 / Ubuntu as a home server instead of my windows server. but would like to know where to start. i have a test server currently setup on a virtual box.
But i think i knead more information about where to start or just give up. I have been working for 3 days now :o on clear and found that i can setup
File server
Plex
Webmail
Website
the website and Plex are setup fine but
I cant get any mail and file serving to work or at least proof of concept
therefore i have far too many questions to ask so is there a good step by step on setting up a ClearOS for the basic/stuppid :( or should i just go home to windows?

Thanks for you help

If this is for the registration of the system, you can say it is a reinstall and it will (should?) re-use your old registration. If this is not what you are talking about, please post back.

If it does not work next time, rather than re-install, we can try to troubleshoot.

Thanks to all it levees me with hope.

All the Information I have found tells me that things that I have configured should work like file sharing email etc. However I think i may have a corrupt install (config). Therefor a reinstall should work but when i login to the community during setup and it asks if this is a new install or a reinstall should i say yes to reinstall or New install?

    Hi John,

I agree with Marcel, let us know what specifically you are having problems with, and we can help. Need to make sure you have the basic stuff done like open port 25 for SMTP and port 110 for POP.

I have replaced multiple MS Small Business Servers with ClearOS, it's not hard but it is different.

What happened to the old user guides?! :( In the new ones there is almost nothing. No SMTP server, fetchmail, IMAP and POP server and so on. This new site is terrible.

Fortunately I've found link to the old guide here. For mail you'll probably want most of the apps listed (not Kaspersky, Anti-spam updates, mail archive and possibly greylisting). You may want Mail Retrieval to pick up mail from your ISP's server and for testing. It is not necessary if you run a fully fledged mail server but that is a relatively big step if you've not done it before. For webmail you'll probably want to look at Roundcube or Zarafa. They both have paid-for apps but there are also threads for installing Roundcube, Hastymail and Squirrelmail yourself (therefore free). Each of these need the web server installed. The paid version of Roundcube integrates a bit better with ClearOS and Zarafa brings more bells and whistles/toys.

    Hi, John Hill!

I'm old Windows Home Server user too. Just a advise just take one step a time. I think it's nice if you can test it on a physical machine. I have ClearOS running in gateway mode and it's rock solid! In the beginning Linux can be overwhelming. So many new stuff to learn. Did you see the ClearOS 6 userguide?

If you stuck just post your problem...
