Hi There.

External 1 - 10.0.0.101 (primary DNS 196.43.34.190)
External 2 - 196.168.1.103 (primary DNS 196.43.34.190)
LAN - 192.168.1.1

I am confused with how to solve this problem.

I have Multi-wan setup on cleorOS 6.2. When I configure my IP setting to have 2 external card configured as mentioned above and I set my DNS server manually to 196.43.34.190 I can't connect to the internet.

If I use the exact same setting with only 1 external (either the 10.0... or 196.1...) it works fine.

So both externals work through DNS 196.43.34.190.

But I cant have them both configured because then i have no internet?? What am I missing?

I have unchecked automatic DNS on each external.

Thanks

No I had not seen it. Our posts crossed. I always open all new posts before going back to look at them one by one so there can be some time between me opening and replying. I'm glad you got it solved and you are now better off with PPPoE as well.

I'm afraid I don't know multiwan. Are you using ClearOS as a DNS cache i.e. does the ClearOS DHCP server hand out the ClearOS LAN IP as the DNS server to your clients or does it hand out the ISP DNS servers IP addresses? If it is the former you can try monitoring the output with a couple of firewall rules:
    iptables -I OUTPUT -d 196.43.34.190 -j LOG
    iptables -I INPUT -s 196.43.34.190 -j LOG
The log goes to /var/log/messages (but there are ways of redirecting it if necessary). If the clients access the external DNS directly, change OUTPUT and INPUT to FORWARD in the above rules. The sort of thing I'd look for is the initial request going out through one interface and then trying to return through the other. This would be a bug. You may need to confirm it with the output from tcpdump.

The other thing you could try temporarily is configuring ClearOS with GoogleDNS (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4) or OpenDNS (208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220). This will only work if the clients use ClearOS as a DNS server.

    Hi Nick

Once again thanks for your input. You will be pleased to know that the issue wasn't related to multiwan or clearos for that matter.

Upon much deeper investigation I found a user who had installed a program called winPcap on his computer which is something that comes with orbit downloader. After removing the program the clearos system worked perfectly with the multiwan function.

I figured this out by setting up the multiwan clearos just with my pc and it connected. Then I added the rest of the network one by one until the internet dropped. Well I ended up with one of the department switches. I then added their computers one by one until the guilty pc stopped the internet. I then asked the user what he did on tuesday morning as thats when it dropped. And we discovered the install off winPcap.

    Thanks again for your time

    Hi Nick

Thank you for taking the time to resolve this. I have bridged both wan connections and have set both WAN's to pppoe. The both get an IP from my ADSL routers.

Still I have the same issue. when I have both enabled my computers won't connect to the internet the browser just hangs waiting for a response. As soon as I remove one of the WAN's whala internet is flying.

This is a fresh install of Clearos. I was running this setup for a long time and last week it just randomly started this issue where i cant have two WAN's configured.

Dont know if its multi-wan? where can I see a log of what happens when my computer tries to make a connection when 2 WAN's are enabled?

    Thanks

I hate the 192.168.0.0/24 and 192.168.1.0/24 subnets as they are too common and therefore cause problems. I'd change the LAN to something like 192.168.168.1/24 and the WAN subnet to something like 172.17.2.0/24 with the gateway on 172.17.2.1 and the WAN on 172.17.2.2. It is really up to you but keep each subnet different.

Can I ask what you have on your modem subnets? If nothing and your modems support bridge bode, if they are ADSL modems see if you can get them into bridge mode and change the ClearOS WAN to PPPoE. If they are cable modems, just put them in bridge mode. Then your ClearOS WAN's will get public IP addresses which simplifies things.

    Hi Nick

Yes both WAN's are from the same ISP and I can change 196.168.1.103 to what ever I need to. What should I make it? the same as the other wan?

    Thanks

One thing looks odd. External2 and LAN appear to be on the same subnet - assuming the usual 255.255.255.0 netmask.

Are your WAN's with the same or different ISP's?
