Ok so trying to get this up and running using a vmware VM, all appears to go well, note the download seems very large at approx 800Mb but no erros or log entries, the eula comes up, click accept and an error appears in the window
/bin/chown: invalid user : "mssql"
also if you navigate away form this page the error clears and is replaced with a link to a MS download page for a windows executable client.
tried various tactical approaches, new VM builds and re-installs at various stages (using samba as directory service, before updates etc, now gathering info, logs and screenies but nothing obvious to a newbie and a lot of web references are about centos and refer to different download packs etc
went to cl to try config from there and obtained this pic

Our team estimates that it will take a few days to bring this app up to snuff. Microsoft added some new features which greatly eases the deployment of this and they have to retool a bunch of steps to make this more stable in the long term.
You can read about that here:
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sql/linux/sql-server-linux-setup#unattended
Until then, I've asked the Marketplace engineering team to temporarily withdraw the app from being listed.

Here is your bug filed:
https://tracker.clearos.com/view.php?id=19211
The developers are working on it and should have an updated fix soon. I'll watch the build system for their commit and report further when I know more. -

Cheers mate I think that's progress, it certainly stopped the chown error but server does not stay in running state so from what i have read the next step would normally be a screen where you are asked to choose which edition to trial, this is not coming up.
The next screen is the admin page for setting the sql sa password and a "system" password (not sure what it means here so just feeding it the root pw) a quick browse round the file system it appears whilst some stuff is put in the clearos/apps directory the actual sql binary is still going in the /opt/mssql/bin path, is this wrong? -

ok mate, seems like someone managed to get it running 6 months ago so maybe it's an issue with an update either on mssql or on clearos, will try the obvious and re-download the iso, but as this is a test to see how user friendly this is for a server install at my friends place, no point in me spending too much time on it, if he goes ahead with plans there will be no one near any level of technical ability at the site. -

Are you installing this from the marketplace? It is trying to use file locations like /var/opt and /opt which are not used by ClearOS.
BTW, better than screenshots are tools like PuTTy (copy by selecting, paste by right-clicking) and WinSCP from a Windoze workstation.
yes initially i used the market place only dropped down to console to try and figure out what was going on as I couldn't find out how to get any info, (what is the native install path for clearos?) the service remained as stopped, pressing start did nothing, nothing was showing in log viewer and no connection available via the sql server management, clearos firewall was disabled and i opened the port on iptables just in case -
