Hi All

I am relatively new to clear OS and was wondering if i can use it to manage my hot spot i have running in my complex.

I have 2 DSL lines with 2 routers that i want balanced,at the moment i have a netgear device that does the balancing but i want to get rid of it.

I want to connect a wireless access point to my clear OS box so users can connect to it and gain access to the internet with transparent proxy mode enabled to speed up browsing a bit, however i dont want users to be able to access one another`s computers via the wireless network.

Can this be done?

Thank you in advance.

Thys

so i would assume if i have my AP connected to the hot lan interface then i also can not have user authentication enabled?

I dont realy care about the failover at the moment i am more interested in the load balancing function,is there a walk trough somewhere that will show me exactly how to go about configuring load balancing,i think for now i am going to have only 3 NIC`s only 1x LAN and 2x WAN and connect my AP to LAN interface with a non transparent proxy with user authentication enabled,is there a way for me to automatically push proxy settings down so i dont have to go to every single client device and add proxy settings?

The proxy does not work with the HotLAN. See this post. I've no idea if you can access the server from the HotLAN but you can manually firewall parts of it like the web interface if needed. I don't think you can do it with 2 NIC's unless you are clever with VLAN's.

MultiWAN is available in the Community version. There may be a fail over issue with it at the moment from the posts we're seeing on the forum.

thanks,i am going to have look at it tonight when i get home,do i have to have 3 NIC`s to acheive this? 1xLAN 1xHot Lan and 1x Wan or can i achieve this with only 2 NIC`s and if i have a hot LAN only i assume that i wont be able to access the web interface of the Clear OS box from the hot lan?

Also how does the multi wan function work and is it available on the comunity version?

One more thing, lets say that i have hot lan with DHCP enabled will the proxy work on the Hot Lan interface?

Defining the NIC (to which your wireless AP is connected to) in ClearOS as a HotLAN should setup the appropriate routing rules (i.e access to the net but no other LAN interfaces)

The clients local firewall will prevent access between clients on the same wireless subnet

Any recommendations on any systems that might be able to do what i want,if at all possible i would love user authentication and bandwidth control but i can do without it,i have used Mikrotik Router OS with some success but it is not as user friendly as i would have liked it to be and it doesn't quite do everything that i need.

If you want to isolate wireless devices, it will probably have to be a WAP function and not a ClearOS function. As a WAP generally acts as a switch and not a hub it uses clever routing internally and knows it does not need to send the packets via ClearOS for "locally available" addresses which would only be sent back to it. I could be wrong here, but I don't think so.
