ClearVM Feature Request

Docker support

I like to see support for Docker containers. The Internet is buzzing of Docker. I think this is a very interesting feature cause this is very lightweight virtualization and can be used on low powered machines.

I have used Docker with a unRAID server for awhile. It worked really well but i'm convinced the devs of Clearcenter can integrate it better. Maybe take a look, install unRAID in a virtual machine and see how these guys did it.

Planning on some form of integration with Docker. Currently waiting for continued maturity of Docker. Feel free to advise if you have further desires as to how you would like to see/use Docker with ClearOS.

From a design perspective, ClearOS marketplace is already a perfect candidate for the one-program-and-dependencies-deployed-as-a-container paradigm. It's perfect. The user would just go to the marketplace, select the package they're interested in as they already do, and the appropriate Docker container would be pulled down, set up, and fired up without stepping on the libraries and version dependencies of any other currently installed package. Fantastic. Very slick.

This would open up the potential possibility that Docker containers containing their isolated ClearOS packages and dependencies could be deployed to vanilla CentOS, or perhaps Fedora, running Docker, unless they invested some effort into the ClearOS Docker registry to check for and deny such cross-pollination.

But it might be that the Docker registry infrastructure is not easily configured for the ClearOS business model where certain packages-containers would be free to Community members; some purchasable by Community members; some free to Business members; some purchasable by Business members, etc. It might be they've checked it out and decided the setup complexity wasn't worth it just yet. But I agree it's the way forward from a technical perspective.

This would definitely be helpful. Ideally I suppose it would leverage the investments already made at Project Atomic to gain the advantage of their optimisations.

However, would a DIY approach be much more complex than creating a base image using the CentOS instructions (labelled there as:
There are more example scripts for creating base images in the Docker GitHub Repo:

    • CentOS / Scientific Linux CERN (SLC) on Debian/Ubuntu or on CentOS/RHEL/SLC/etc.

and just using ClearOS source instead of vanilla CentOS?
