Hi,
I am looking to install ClearOS as my day to day server.
I have my own external domain name set up with my ISP and a fixed IP Address. Previously I ran a Windows SBS Server and had my DrayTek Vigor router set to non DHCP mode and port forwarded the usual things for an SBS box:

25 for email
80/443 for the web
1723 for PPTP VPN
3389 for Remote Desktop

I would like to do the same for the new server, but I am not 100% sure which option to choose of the three modes that ClearOS wants you to choose. I am pretty sure I do not want Gateway mode as I do not want my server directly connected to the internet I would rather it sit behind the Vigor which will do NAT and only forward the ports mentioned above everything else being blocked.

So that leaves me the Standalone with Firewall or Standalone without Firewall. Coming from a Windows background the SBS box had a firewall in addition to the NAT hardware firewall provided by the Draytek 2860ac. So my leaning is to go for the Standalone with Firewall but could do with some community advice as to whether that would be the correct option or things would work better if I go for the non-firewall standalone option?

I basically want the ClearOS box to do the following:

File Server using SAMBA shares.
Mail Server using IMAP or possibly Kapano if there is a free version to give exchange server like capability.
Webmail access and be able to set Out Of Office.
VPN Server
Backup to multiple USB Drives
Antivirus and antispam for email
Provide DHCP for the client machines.

Client PCs will be running Ubunto Linux or Windows 10

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Probably Standalone mode is perfectly fine in your case since you're protected behind the Draktek appliance. If you select Standalone with firewall, all it will mean is that you'll need to explicitly open ports on your ClearOS server for resources even on the LAN. In a home environment, this is likely not required and just annoying.

    Ben,

Thanks, I will go with the Standalone Server without firewall option.
I was just concerned that not having the firewall on might still pose some kind of risk that I was not aware of.
