In a VLAN the packets for TCP/IP are 'tagged' with a header to encapsulate for the VLAN. If you set up a VLAN interface in ClearOS then ClearOS will tag the packets and this interface should be connected to a switch with a trunk port. On the switches, you can set untagged ports which mean that the server/workstation/PC interface connected does not need a special configuration and the switch will manage the tagging of the packet for transmission across the network. VLAN capable switches can have multiple VLANs on a trunk port to allow for a single server interface to have multiple networks. Using this method, for example, you can setup gateway mode in ClearOS with just one NIC. -

Each VLAN is assigned a specific id. This id is a number and can usually be anything between 1 and 4094. VLAN 1 is most commonly used for management so this should not normally be used. Number 0 is actually a special case - google for use...
There is a wealth of information on the internet about VLANs. Start your browser and start searching with google - rather than "Please provide me a complete guide for this" - they already exist - just go find them yourself...
