I have been running ClearOS6(.8) Community on an IBM SFF (3GB mem) for ~4 years. 1 - 3 users. System runs on an 80GB HD with a 1TB drive for shares and users. Plus a 1TB USB backup drive (rsync cron jobs). All the users are XP with roaming profiles.

Time to upgrade....

I just ordered a Zotac Nano AD12 plus (2GB 320GB drive). The ROI on just power savings is ~12 mo.

Now the questions:

Should I keep the 320GB internal and add my 1TB sata via the eSATA (and an eSATA adapter) or just swap out the 320GB drive?

Should I run my backup drive as USB or make IT the eSATA drive (then I would have to switch it to eSATA).

Now the big issues: I will be replacing all the user hardware with Win7 systems. I don't like Win10 business model. I will want roaming profiles, but I can make a 'clean' break. Except my main user is my wife, and she will want to keep configs like her Thunderbird setup (though really this will be the chance to move her from POP3 to IMAP! Finally!).

I vaguely remember that XP roaming profiles was not easy 4 years ago, and I have to make manual changes to the smb.conf. Is Win7 roaming profiles supported?

Is there a way to migrate the old XP profiles to the new ClearOS7 Community platform and upgrade them for new Win 7 workstations? I suspect I can just copy over the login scripts for 'mounting' the shares.

I have LOTS of VLANs here, so I can run the new server, with the same domain name on a different subnet during the migration.

Anything else basic I am overlooking?

Thanks

I am familiar with config TB for IMAP. My mailserver uses Dovecot for POP/IMAP and I migrated myself years ago. Just the wife does not things to go bump. It happened once that I lost the drive on my fileserver and the backups went too. Big foo foo. So this time...

Anyway, the Zotac nano AD12 came today. I dropped in the 1TB drive and did the first step for the install. It is pulling 10W idle, so I expect the 12mo ROI on power savings. Not counting cooling savings in the summer or longer UPS time if a power outage.

Will give an update later after I get the Win7 system to test out roaming profiles.

FWIW, for a Thunderbird user, moving them over to IMAP is easy. All you have to do is enable IMAP on the server then set up an new account in TB using IMAP. From the new account send a message then delete it from your sent box. This should set up your sent box and trash. Then you can just drag and drop e-mails from her POP account to her IMAP account in TB.

The disadvantage of doing this now is that it is one more thing for you to migrate to the new box.

I am more inclined that this is a new install and, since ALL systems are new, new profiles will be created. Nothing carried over. Plus I can fix up items for my wife cleanly. :)

But the filesystem point? The user directories are under /home on the ClearOS6 server. They are rsynced every night at 3am. Copying them to the new server is easy. But what is this about ACLs? /home is ext4 in an lvm partition. And it will be pretty much whatever ClearOS7 uses. They have full ACL support, correct?

Win7 roaming profiles are different but should work. They use the v2 extension. If you want to preserve the users directory you will need to do a backup and restore on version 7. You will also need to implement or make sure you are using a filesystem that already has implement the ACL support so that user's permissions will work on the new .v2 profiles.

Because of the complexity of roaming profiles, I recommend that you do a test migration first to non-production hardware so that you can work out any profile bugs beforehand.
