I have been running ClearOS6(.8) Community on an IBM SFF (3GB mem) for ~4 years. 1 - 3 users. System runs on an 80GB HD with a 1TB drive for shares and users. Plus a 1TB USB backup drive (rsync cron jobs). All the users are XP with roaming profiles.

Time to upgrade....

I just ordered a Zotac Nano AD12 plus (2GB 320GB drive). The ROI on just power savings is ~12 mo.

Now the questions:

Should I keep the 320GB internal and add my 1TB sata via the eSATA (and an eSATA adapter) or just swap out the 320GB drive?

Should I run my backup drive as USB or make IT the eSATA drive (then I would have to switch it to eSATA).

Now the big issues: I will be replacing all the user hardware with Win7 systems. I don't like Win10 business model. I will want roaming profiles, but I can make a 'clean' break. Except my main user is my wife, and she will want to keep configs like her Thunderbird setup (though really this will be the chance to move her from POP3 to IMAP! Finally!).

I vaguely remember that XP roaming profiles was not easy 4 years ago, and I have to make manual changes to the smb.conf. Is Win7 roaming profiles supported?

Is there a way to migrate the old XP profiles to the new ClearOS7 Community platform and upgrade them for new Win 7 workstations? I suspect I can just copy over the login scripts for 'mounting' the shares.

I have LOTS of VLANs here, so I can run the new server, with the same domain name on a different subnet during the migration.

Anything else basic I am overlooking?
