Hoping I can gain some insight from others that may already be running this scenario.

Looking to deploy ClearOS on bare metal and configure services to handle Firewall, Domain Controller, Active Directory, File and Print duties.

From a Domain Controller and Directory services stand point, will need for the environment to handle Windows (7, 8.x and 10) clients.

From what I have read this can be accomplished with Samba (Beta). My concern is "Beta". Is there a better, more test direction I should be looking at?

Any insight appreciated.

If you are interested in tinkering with Samba Directory, please see this post. Help would be gratefully appreciated.

You can install an instance of ClearOS running Samba Directory server on any VM or live box as long as your main ClearOS instance can connect to it. You could even, say run it within VirtualBox on your main ClearOS instance. The suggestion is that you only use it for its directory services - users and groups. Everything else should be controlled through your main instance of ClearOS. The reason for this that many apps do not play well with Samba Directory at the moment.

Can I ask if you really need Samba Directory, or can you use LDAP? My understanding is that the only real benefit of Samba Directory is that you can use group policy tools. If you use Samba Directory and another instance of ClearOS I believe you will need the Active Directory Connector on your main instance to get the two to talk to each other.

Appreciate the information. Very new to the ClearOs approach. Can you elaborate on "...installing Samba on its own instance of ClearOS"? My objective is to have a single physical server with services and virtualized servers. Are you suggesting I virtualize a ClearOS VM with ONLY Samba on my ClearOS (physical) server?

The best directory system to run all apps together is Windows Networking (Samba). Their naming is very similar but there are completely different apps. You can read more about Windows Networking (Samba) here: https://www.clearos.com/resources/documentation/clearos/content:en_us:7_ug_samba

    Will review as well!

    Thanks!!

That is understandable. Samba currently doesn't play well with other apps on ClearOS. Samba on ClearOS is the closest replacement of Active Directory available (Group Policy can be administered using Remote Server Administration Tools) . Because of its instability with other apps, I recommend installing Samba on its own instance of ClearOS and installing other apps and services on another instance of ClearOS.
