Hi,

I need to run VirtualBox under ClearOS 6.6.0, and for that I need a GUI. I've been following this ClearOS guide.

The command to install KDE:
# yum --enablerepo=clearos-core install gnome-terminal kdemultimedia

Results in:
...
Error: Package: libsmbclient-3.6.23-20.el6.x86_64 (clearos-core)
Requires: samba-winbind-clients = 3.6.23-20.el6
Installed: samba-winbind-clients-3.6.23-14.el6_6.x86_64 (@clearos)
samba-winbind-clients = 3.6.23-14.el6_6
You could try using --skip-broken to work around the problem
You could try running: rpm -Va --nofiles --nodigest

So it seems KDE needs a later version of Samba Client than ClearOS repositories have available.

Does anyone have an answer to this please? I don't especially want to hear "grab this version of that from blah repository" kina thing, I'd rather stick with ClearOS repositories if poss.

Thanks.

    Just in case, download my driver somewhere. Then, personally I'd uninstall your current driver ("rpm -e kmod-e1000e" but check it is not uninstalling any dependencies) as I don't think you need it. Then reboot. If you need it, to install from a local file you can do:
    yum localinstall filename.rpm

    [edit]
    BTW there is another kernel update on its way soon for a big security fix.

    Could you remind me if I need to install NIC drvier before upgrade or just download it before upgrade ?
    Could you remind me how I'll install/upgrade NIC driver to version : 3.3.4 ?

    dkms is ok to be installed,but I would like to be sure I've got every thing in case of NIC issue :

    The latest kernel has the 3.2.5 version of the e1000e driver which is later that the kmod one you have installed. Perhaps you should try the stock one after you upgrade the kernel.

    It is up to you. You could even download my latest package, do the kernel upgrade and remove the old kmod package to see what happens. If the NIC does not work, you can then install the driver you've downloaded.

    It is sort of OK, but could leave you with an older version of the driver if the kernel version is newer. I can check the kernel's driver version at home, but I'd probably upgrade the kmod driver anyway. What version of the kmod driver do you have installed (rpm -qa | grep kmod-e1000e)?

    Thanks. I'm not very familiar with kernel and kmod so let me recap what I should do :

    - Download last drvier from you site (in case it fails after upgrade)
    - Change yum.conf (comment exclude line)
    - run yum install dkms again
    Am I correct ?

    I believe the e1000e package has been fine in all 3.10 kernels. The issue with the 82574 NIC was really in the 2.6 kernels (ClearOS6) prior to the incorporation of v2.3.2 of the e1000e driver. I can give you no guarantees if the stock driver will work with your NIC. It probably will, but anyway, if you are using a kmod driver, it should take precedence over the stock driver. If you need the latest compiled kmod driver I have a version here.

    I've got the community version it's sure. I've install version 7.1

    Yum seams to by configured to prevent kernel upgrade : yum.conf
    [main]
    http_caching=packages
    cachedir=/var/cache/yum/$basearch/$releasever
    keepcache=0
    debuglevel=2
    logfile=/var/log/yum.log
    exactarch=1
    obsoletes=1
    gpgcheck=1
    plugins=1
    installonly_limit=5

    # Temporarily stop all kernel related updates
    exclude=kernel,kernel-devel,kernel-firmware,kernel-headers,kernel-tools,kernel-tools-libs

    May be the reason is that my NIC on my H8SGL is not recognized at COS install and I have to look at the folowing diver/installa procedure
    Two (2) LAN ports supported by two onboard Intel® 82574 dual port Ethernet controller for 10/100/1000Base-T
    One (1) dedicated IPMI LAN port (H8SGL-F only)
    https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/15817/Network-Adapter-Driver-for-PCI-E-Gigabit-Network-Connections-under-Linux-

    Driver Intel : https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/15817/ (H8SGL - Intel 82574 - e1000e-3.3.3.tar)

    KMOD procedure : https://www.clearos.com/clearfoundation/social/community/build-drivers#reply-68951

    So will kernel upgrade will let me with both NIC down ?

    Something does not look right. Which version of ClearOS are you on? Can you also do a "yum list kernel-devel --enablerepo=* --showduplicates"? If you have the Community version of ClearOS, you are way behind on your kernel updates (kernel-3.10.0-327.36.2.v7 is the latest). Have you blocked kernel updates in your yum configuration?

    kernel-tools-libs-3.10.0-229.7.2.v7.x86_64

    [root@home ~]# uname -r
    3.10.0-229.7.2.v7.x86_64

    I guess I've got the default ClearOS config for update they are done in background regulary.
    But I reboot few days ago.

    Typically this happens when a kernel update is about to come through - the devel package arrives before the kernel is available. The other case is that your system has updated to a new kernel but you have not rebooted to activate the new kernel. For this reason I only update the kernel manually.

    What is the output to:
    rpm -qa | grep ^kernel | sort
    uname -r

    I fail to find a suitable guide.
    Virtual box's one tells : yum install dkms
    but it fails :
    [root@home yum.repos.d]# yum install dkms

    Just for the record folks, I recently installed VirtualBox on ClearOS 7.1 with very little trouble, and used PhpVirtualBox 5.0-5 as the GUI for it.

    Runs very nicely, guest machines come up using Remote Desktop on my PC.

    PVB 5.0 does grizzle that it's the wrong version. It should be 5.1 to match the latest VB that I installed, but it seems to run OK. There is no PVB 5.1 yet.
