Hi,

I've found a really nice media server some time ago and i think this is a must have for CleaOS. The developers of Plex are creating Linux beta versions of there software. There are already version for Ubuntu, Slackware (unRAID) and upcoming versions for Synology and Qnap NAS devices.

You can do real cool things with Plex Media Server. Have a look here and here When you have installed Plex Media Server you can stream to all kind of clients. Windows, Mac OS, Android, iOS devices like phones and tablets. Even LG has integrated Plex client in there Televisions so you can stream content directly from a Plex Media Server to a LG Television.

[strike]So we have to convince the developers of Plex to create a version for RHEL 6.1 so the community can create a add-in for ClearOS Enterprise/Home.

I started a thread over at the Plex forums. I'll hope you are just as enthusiastic as I am.

Lets covince them![/strike]

Update:

There is a CentOS version of Plex Media Server for awhile now. You can easy install it on your ClearOS server. See the download page. You can download the rpm to your tmp directory and install it with:

yum localinstall plexmediaserver-0.9.7.22.511-4b5280f.x86_64.rpm

Update:

Ben Chambers is packaging and making a app for Plex Server.[/color]

Update:

The Plex Server app is now available. Go to the Marketplace and install!!!

Enjoy!

    Hi Gywer_Johnson,

    Could you please clarify what you did to relocate the plexmediaserver files? My system disk is quickly filling with these metadata, while my large media disk would have more than enough room.

    Thanks, Roel
    In the Web app your_server:32400, when you edit your library (gear wheel drop down), under Add Folders, you can specify the path to your library.

    Hi guys,

    Nick has it correct. I am running plex on a windows 7 machine behind my clearOS gateway. I am using a minimal system for ClearOS, and I wanted something beefier to run my media server.

    I'll try closing the firewall, but keeping the port forwarding on and see what that does.

    EDIT: I've removed the firewall port openings on that port, and left the port forwarding to my win7 box on that port. I still can't connect to it from outside my LAN.

    I don't want to have to install UPnP on clearOS for security reasons, but I think I might have to.

    I think Nathan needs to clarify how his system is setup. It sounds like he's using ClearOS as a gateway server and that he is or was running a PLEX server on a Windows7 PC behind ClearOS. It sounds like he wants to only use ClearOS as a gateway appliance. What say ye Nathan?

    @Marcel,
    I don't think so. His Plex is running on a different machine so he needs to close 32400 and just leave the port forwarding.

    Hi Nathan,

    Open the Plex web interface. If you go to configuration --> server --> connect and then tick the "show advanced" button there you can manually specify port 32400. Also you need to open port 32400 in your firewall.

    Hope it helps...

    Don't confuse openng ports with port forwarding. Opening ports is for traffic destined for ClearOS whereas Port Forwarding is for traffic destined through ClearOS to the LAN behind ClearOS. They are mutually exclusive.

    I have been running plex on a win7 machine for a while now....I have clearOS as a gateway on a minimal spec system so I want the media server on something a bit more beefy.

    I can't get the streaming to work. When I go to the config page in my browser I keep getting the error that I am unable to reach it from outside my network.

    I've added port forwarding on 32400 to my media server IP address, and I've also opened up the TCP and UDP port 34200 in the firewall, but it still won't connect.

    Anybody here know what I might be missing? do I need to install UPnP? I'm a bit leery about doing that for security reasons.

    Gujs,

    You can manually update Plex. If you download the centOS version and you can install it with "yum local install" .It overwrite the old install.

    Sure...I normally try and guinea pig the new releases but I've had no spare time lately. For those wanting to run the latest, I've uploaded the latest Plex (non-mediapass) versions to the beta repository. Give the repos a couple of hours to sync...when they do, running:

    ENABLE_BETA=True yum upgrade plexmediaserver

    will upgrade anyone who has installed Plex Media server via Marketplace in the past to version 0.9.9.12.504-3e7f93c.

    If I get some feedback that there's no hiccups, I'll promote it to the core Plex private repo.

    Hello !

    Thank you guys for porting Plex to the market, I alos installed Plex some days before and updated now via the market. No problem, everythink works fine. But:
    My system partition is almost full because of more and more files located in /var/lib/plexmediaserver/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/Media/localhost. There seems to be some (!) cached files of my thousands pics of my kids :-)

    Do you have any idea where to change the "cache" location ? There is enough room on an second hd mounted as flexshare ...

    I even changed in /lib/systemd/system/plexmediaserver.service the line
    Environment=PLEX_MEDIA_SERVER_HOME=/var/flexshare/shares/cache

    but it won't work as expected :blush:

    Do you have any other ideas ?

    Best regards an (lately) a happy new year 2014 !!

    I see no reason why you couldn't just install the PlexPass beta version. The rpm system has version numbers in them so the ClearOS one won't overwrite it unless you stop updating the betas and the public one becomes a newer version.

    Me too! I aggree that we have to follow the public releases.

    That said, early access is one thing, but PlexPass features only (like Device Sync) I think is tied to the subscription webservice calls back to Plex and not differentiated by what RPM you install. Can anyone confirm that? I only say this because I've never seen a download in my Plex Pass account that is any different than the public download links. As far as i know when you put your PlexPass login with a stable version you have all PlexPass features but the beta's which you can find in the forums have the new features. The public releases doesn't have those new features. Of course this beta software and has bugs. So i think it's not wise to use this with the marketplace app. In other words stick with the public releases. What i was suggesting a way to install the beta version. So power users have the latest features. I guess just installing the beta RPM from Plex.tv (new domain).

    The latest version is 0.9.8.18.290 and that is a "public version". There is also a Plexpass version. If you are a Plexpass subscriber then you have access to these early builds. Also as Plexpass user you have all features enables. Have you thought how to install such a version.

    I will update the first post.

    Dirk,

    The Plex app from the Marketplace is just a wrapper to install Plex Media Server...well, that's not entirely true...I wrote an ACL that gives you optional control over who accesses the media server (using Pete's Network Map tool) and at what time. Adds more control than Plex's built in ACL which is done using subnets or IP ranges.

    The version of Plex Media in Marketplace's repo for Plex is 0.9.8.10.215-020456b. I notice there's a more recent version from Plex (0.9.8.18.290-11b7fdd) that I'll get up to our repo shortly...Basically, if you're running 0.9.8.10.215-020456b or later, plex media won't change....just the app (for Webconfig) will be installed.

    In other words,

    yum --enablerepo=clearos-contribs install app-plex

    for users who have already installed Plex RPM will now have the Plex front-end in Webconfig.

    But for new users (6.5 only), this command won't work...you'll need to install it via the Marketplace so that your registered device picks up on the free (but private) repo we provide for plexmediaserver RPM.

    Make sense?

    B

    Hi Brian,

    Thanks for that. Sorry it took me a while to reply to your message.

    You won't believe this, but just the day before you posted, I got impatient and after some searching, found some instructions to install Plex and got it all working :)

    When I saw your post, I recognized the steps :) Thank you for taking the time to post them though because others who're searching for the steps (and can't wait for the apps), will surely find it useful.

    Plex is awesome and so far, it's running well. One thing I noticed is that for quite a few video files, when I pause them and start playback again, it doesn't resume, but starts playback from the beginning. I'm looking around for a solution to that.

    Thanks again!

    Sri,
    I never even heard of plex before until about 10 mins ago. Its actually pretty simple to install just follow this simple howto (i hate waiting for apps!). Oh sorry if this howto seems lengthy you mentioned that you don't have much Linux knowledge so I tried to be as straight forward as possible!

    1.) Download Putty ssh client from here

    2.) Open putty and type in the IP address and SSH port of your ClearOS box if you haven't changed the port of SSH it will be 22

    3.) Click open

    4.) Accept the cert (click yes)

    5.) Login with user: root

    6.) Hit enter

    7.) Type your password (you will not see this)

    8.) Hit enter

    9.) Type the following:
    nano /etc/yum.repos.d/plex.repo

    10.) Hit enter

    11.) Copy and paste(right click) the following into your putty window:
    [plex]
    name=plex
    baseurl=http://plex.r.worldssl.net/PlexMediaServer/fedora-repo/release/$basearch/
    enabled=0
    gpgkey=https://plexapp.com/plex_pub_key.pub
    gpgcheck=1

    12.) Save (ctrl+x), type yes, hit enter

    13.) Now type the following and hit enter:
    yum --enablerepo=plex install plexmediaserver

    14.) It will ask you if you want to install the plex package hit Y

    15.) Ok now plex is installed

    16.) Type the following to start the plex media server and hit enter:
    service plexmediaserver start

    17.) Now you'll prolly want plex to start up when the ClearOS box does type this and hit enter:
    chkconfig plexmediaserver on

    18.) Open your browser and go to the following url (note: swap out IP_ADDRESS with the IP of your ClearOS box):
    http://IP_ADDRESS:32400/web/index.html

    That should get you started like I said earlier I have never used this application before but it was very simple to install at least for me. I will be playing with it a bit to see what it can do and what the limitations are.

    Eagerly waiting for Plex to appear in the Marketplace. Any idea of when that might be?

    I managed to get miniDLNA working (after a bit of struggle) only to realise that it doesn't support transcoding.

    Then, I tried to get serviio working, but was unable to do so. Spent two days on it and even posted on the Serviio forum, to no avail.

    I'm not very familiar with Linux, which hasn't helped.

    I do hope that Plex will be the answer to all that trouble :)

    Thanks!
