Hi,

I am running ClearOS Community Edition 7 and have got email working, however when in Outlook 2016 I noticed a couple of things:

1. When I try and delete an item in my inbox I get the error:
"The operation cannot be performed because the object has been deleted"
2. There are only these folders showing in my mailbox:
"Inbox"
"Outbox"
"Sync Isues (This computer only)"
"Search Folders"

I was expecting "Sent" "Drafts" etc and even when I right click the mailbox I and select "IMAP Folders" I only see "Inbox" as the only subscribable folder??

Have I missed something on the server or on the client end?

Nick,
It looks like the issue is either down to certificates or to setting "inbox" as the default folder in the advanced settings?
After poking around I found that a fix was to go to:

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/office/forum/office_365hp-outlook/unable-to-delete-emails-message-the-operation/feb1c2f0-430c-4622-a1ce-790474f44afc?page=3&auth=1

The Answer there is what I tried:

This fix will most likely solve your problems, simply do this

FILE - Account Settings - Account Settings - Change - More Settings - Advanced
Where it says Folders - Root folder path:
Then enter the word: inbox

I entered that in lower case and then saved the settings.
I then did "File >> Exit" out of Outlook.
When I first loaded it after doing that I could not still delete items in my inbox, then after a few moments the certificate dialog popped up saying that the certificate could not be verified so I said "Yes" to allow that anyway and then it popped up again (I assume 1 for inbound server and 1 again for outbound server) once both were accepted suddenly the tree of folders expanded and I now have:

Inbox
Sent
Deleted Items
Drafts
Junk
Outbox
Sync Issues (this computer only)
Local Failures (this computer only)
Search folders.

I then tried deleting the Outlook Test Message that was in my inbox and it deleted fine!

Sorted...

Want to share what finally worked for me. I had already put "inbox" in as the root, but still didn't work. When I went to my IMAP account details, I saw that I hadn't checked the box to "mark items for deletion but don't move them automatically". After I checked that box, I can now delete emails! Yea!

    Nick,
Thanks for your help, it does look like it was an issue with Outlook 2016 not ClearOS and the IMAP email so thanks for suggesting that and your help so far!

    Nick,

I only set the server up about a week ago so the certificate issue should not be part of it. Because it is self issued Outlook does moan, but the latest version of Outlook (I am running Office 365 Home Premium so always have the latest version) does allow you to accept the certificate. So it seems happy enough with the certificate.

I have been out all day today visiting a client so have not had a look for the issue on Google but will have a poke about now and see if I can unravel what could be causing it?

There should be nothing in particular you should need to do in ClearOS. The only issue which comes to mind is a certificate one which you may run into a year after your initial installation and only with IMAPS or POPS. The issue appears to be that Outlook may not like expired certificates. The default cyrus-imap one lasts for one year, so you may need to recreate one in a year's time. I think most e-mail clients don't mind if the certificate has expired.

I could have sworn I replied to this yesterday. I don't have Outlook 2016 to test with and Outlook 2010, the only one I have available, was hopeless for imap. Your best bet is to google "outlook 2016 imap" or "outlook 2016 cyrus". I came up with a few references yesterday, and also one for 2013. I think 2016 was the first fully imap compliant version so you have a chance, but it needs a particular set up.

I will have a look, is there anything in the ClearOS configuration that I need to look at such as a permissions issue or something?

It looks like you have the classic mail set up with cyrus-imap.

Push e-mail is a good thing if your clients support it. It means a connection is maintained between the client and server and when a new message comes in, the server can immediately notify the client rather than wait for the client to poll the server. I would expect Outlook to support push e-mail. My clients Thunderbird and K-9 do.

I only have Outlook 2010 at work and no access to configure it so I don't know how it works with IMAP. I'll check at work tomorrow, but aren't the Trash and Drafts at the same level as the Inbox? Are they configurable? For drafts, have you tried creating an e-mail then saving it to make it set up a Drafts folder?

In Thunderbird and replicated in Roundcube, the Trash, Drafts and Sent are all under the Inbox. You could try logging in with Roundcube to see your current folder set up.

    Nick,
Yes please delete the other thread I only did a second one as I thought the first one didn't get sent.
I am using the Postfix/Cyrus-imap I think, In my dashboard I have under Server:

    Server/Messaging:
    IMAP & POP Server
    Mail Antispam
    Mail Antivirus
    Roundcube Webmail
    SMTP Server

The only thing that confused me was the section "Push Email" as that sounds like sending email or what I would think is SMTP's job, so it did cross my mind that I didn't need both Push Email enabled and SMTP as well?

I do have an inbox and an outbox but I was expecting to have a Trash folder and Drafts etc but when I right-click and select IMAP folders and search for all folders it only shows "inbox"??

    Hi Graham,

Is it OK to delete your other thread. As a new poster, your first couple of posts get moderated so do not show up immediately.

What e-mail set up do you have? Postfix/Cyrus-imap, Postfix/Zarafa or Postfix Kopano?

I am only familiar with the first. I found the Thunderbird client worked well with it out of the box, but things like the Sent folder were only created when the first e-mail was sent. On the iPad iOS, I seem to remember I had to map some individual folders back to cyrus-imap.
