Hi, I'm hoping someone can help me. Im new to ClearOS and am trying to install the community edition for my home gateway. I am using an old computer running an i3 HT processor and 8GB of ram. I know the system is fully functioning and capable because I have been using it as my OPNsense firewall/router right before I tried the ClearOS install.

During the ClearOS install it recognizes both my NICs but after install completes and I reboot, It brings up the Network Console screen where its supposed to give the default IP to login to the webconfig. The problem is that it doesnt give me an IP address it just says to login at w.x.y.z:81.

I can click the button to setup network and I see my WAN and LAN links are both up. Only the WAN shows an IP address (DHCP from my provider) and LAN is blank. If I physically swap the cables I get the same result. Both show link is up and the WAN has an IP. LAN is blank.

I cant get any further in the install process since I cant get an IP to access the webconfig.

Any help/guidance as to how I should proceed would be really appreciated!

Thanks,
Tony

It wouldnt let me set a static IP or access from my wan IP, so I reinstalled and it let me set the static IP for the LAN. Finally it is working. I have access to the webconfig and was able to complete the setup.

Thanks for all your help, I really appreciate it!

You can set it during installation or from the console. Now you are installed, do it from the console.

If you know your WAN IP - and I hope your password is strong - you can connect to your WAN IP from elsewhere on https://your_WAN_IP:81 and go through the first run wizard. You should then be able to change it from the Webconfig. I'd recommend from the console and close the incoming webconfig port as soon as you can (closing the port only affects the WAN side of the firewall).

Thanks for the info. It must have been automatically set to dhcp. Where would I change it to static? Do I set that during install or after the reboot at the Network console screen?

    Thanks again for the help!

The LAN should generally be configured with a static IP even if you have another DHCP server on your LAN. The reason for that is that if it is the gateway you never want it to change IP address.

I suggest you give your LAN interface a static IP but not in the 192.168.0.0/24 or 192.168.1.0/24 subnets (the default is 192.168.1.0/24 but you probably lost it by setting the NIC to DHCP.

Typically a gateway is given a .1 or .254 IP address but there is no specific requirement to do so.
