So it looks like my server is on the way out so I am after a new one. It needs a fair bit of capacity for use as a local file server so I was thinking a 4 bay hot swap thing but I am not sure what is compatible with ClearOS. Any recommendations?

Did you buy a HP ProLiant MicroServer Gen8?
If so, I think thy are quite fussy about the type of memory installed.
See the 'RAM' section in the link below for more information that would be useful :-

How much RAM should I install? Basically it will be a web server and a local file server and the gateway (taking the place of a router) and have it do firewall and intrusion detection and prevention and also an SMTP server if necessary for notification of RAID HDD failure. It will be serving 1-4 PCs. Thanks. -

Whirlpool forums here in Australia have quite a lot of information re. HP's Microserver
e.g.

from memory two things at least, maybe more... not sure of the models involved...
Excessive fan noise
No AHCI on the SATA connection for the DVD if you wish to use that for a disk drive
instead.
There are modded BIOS (links given) and fixes for these problems I believe. -

I hear a lot of people using the HP Proliant MicroServers for home but I don't know if anyone tried to use it with ClearOS.
