Hi, there was a generalized power failure some time ago, and on rebooting the system goes to emergency mode. I have tried rebooting again, but the system simply will not boot properly. Is there any way to use a safe-mode or some other way to repair the installation ?? If I eventually need to reinstall, how can I retain all users and settings ??

Thanks

Manolo

What are you seeing when you try to boot

You can boot into rescue mode. If you know the error you may be able to fix it. There should be a rolling 10 days of configuration backups available in /var/clearos/configuration_backup. These can be restored onto a new system if you want. You will have to google how to mount a USB stick to copy the data off. Flexshares are under /var/flexshare/shares and websites under /var/www/html for the default site and /var/www/virtual for the rest. What other data do you have in ClearOS?

    Hi Nick,

I will try to copy all data tonight, I have users, and firewall settings, plus the nextcloud data that I want to keep.

Once I copy things off to a USB drivem how do I load the last configuration if I end up resintalling ??

I will also try to go in to rescue mode, as I understand from the link I need an install USB and then trubleshooting etc.

Will let you know how that goes, I hope I can get this sorted.

    Thanks

    Manolo

To restore the backup just use the System > Backup > Configuration Backup and Restore menu. It will try to reinstall all your apps and your users. It will be better to register the system first as an Upgrade/Reinstall first or it won't be able to load NC or any other paid app.

Be careful of the firewall settings. If you go to a new machine, they may not be directly convertible. Please see the first blue box and second pink box at https://documentation.clearos.com/content:en_us:7_ug_configuration_backup.

Nextcloud data is under /var/clearos/nextcloud/data, but you can't sensibly restore the NC database. That will need setting up again.

You will need a USB or CD to go into recovery mode.

If your system crashed between Jun 30th and about July 2nd and you have ClearOS Community, it is possible that you had a bad update to grub2 which will make your machine unbootable. Please see the workaround in this thread.

My system crashed day before yesterday, it is a home edition, although it is an upgrade from the community version. I wonder if that makes any difference. I am going for a full install, and try to restore settings and rebuild anything else that could be missing. I am going to use the same system as apparently it works fine, it's just either a drive or software problem.

It boots fine, and starts loading fine, but as the loading bars at the bottom of the screen reach the end it crashes and gives me the warning, going to emergency mode.

Thanks Nick for the help will post news on the fix.

It should not make any difference which version you are using> Community have received a fix and the faulty update was never released to paid customers. Check that you have disabled the clearos-updates, clearos-centos, clearos-centos-updates and something like clearos-epel as these are community repos.

When the bar is going across the screen, if you hit the right arrow (and possibly all sorts of other keys) it will switch to a text display scrolling by. You may then be able to capture the issue. It may also appear in your boot log and/or messages log under /var/log.

I decided to reinstall from scratch, some of the settings were restored others were not, thanks nick for all the help. I recently posted another question related to the reinstall.
