I have tried various permutations of the MySQL reset password suggested approach for ClearOS 6 but it does not seen to work for MariaDB on ClearOS 7.

Have you followed this process? I have not checked it out and it may be old. Also note there is a difference between the user version of mysql (MariaDB) and the system version (system-mariadb). I would not try to reset the system-mariadb password or things may break.
