Hi,
I hope I'm posting in the right area. I've tried to search for an answer myself, but I think I don't have the right words to search with.
The problem is that I can't access the webconfig page at IP-address:81. I can log in to the GUI console in ClearOS, but there isn't much to configure there. I've never used ClearOS before. This is my first install of ClearOS. I've been using GNU/Linux since last summer. Been quite a learning curve, but really fun.
I was wanting to learn more networking and thought I would install ClearOS as a VM gateway to a VM network I could play with.
i don't know what information is needed, so I 'll just put down what I remember doing...here goes...

I am on a gnu/linux host. I installed ClearOS-DVD-x86_64.iso as a virtual machine. It has 2 NICs: one bridged to the 'real' LAN (or WAN from it's point of view I guess), and one set to the VM private LAN I was going to create and put other Vms on.
Everything seems to have gone well for installation, except that I can't access the web interface. I don't see any way to configure anything from ClearOS itself other than log in to the command line.
I can access the cli logging in as root on alt-F2

I can ping the bridged NIC address from the 'real' LAN (from the host system), and nmap shows 81 is open. (update: Well, it did. Now even with all firewalls off and open, the ClearVM won't respond.) Yet I can still ping it.
When I try in Firefox it says the connection was reset, and if I press F5 a lot I can see Go Back(recommended) and Advanced, which at first made me think Firefox was complaining about security or no https or something again, so I installed Brave. But Brave browser says "This page isn't working: 192.168.23.123:81 didn't send any data.
So it DOES make some sort of contact, but gets nothing in response.

On my host system I don't see any kernal.log messages from iptables about dropped packages (I'm logging INPUT & OUTPUT), but I flushed my iptables and set the policy to ACCEPT. Still could not access the interface.
So on the clearVM I did the same: saved and flushed the iptables and set policy to ACCEPT for input and output. The stock rules looked pretty complete and sane, but I figured just blow it all away and make it fully open.
Still can not access IP-address:81 in the browser. There still isn't a response, but it doesn't fail like if I try to go to a non-existant address. It immediately goes to the above mentioned error. If I go to an bad address, teh browser just tries to load forever and displays nothing.

I feel like I'm babbling, so I'll leave it at that. I'm sure there are nFinity - 1 possible issues here. If I can provide any helpful clarification, please let me know.

Please can you confirm you are using https and not http - https://your_server_ip:81. You will get a browser warning in Firefox and you will have to accept the the default certificate. I believe Brave won't work as it will not allow a self-signed certificate.

Be wary of manipulating the firewall manually. At some point ClearOS will overwrite anything you do. I suggest you restart it with a "systemctl restart firewall". This will reset it and, by default it should be open on ports 22 and 81.

Well, as per usual when I finally break down and post some long winded plea for help, i solved the issue on accident.

When you are trying to access the web interface, be sure to put the "https://"; in front of your "192.168.x.x:81"
It makes all the difference in the world! I'm up and running. I'm in, and configuring everything now!
If a moderator finds this, you can probably safely erase it LOL.

Thanks Nick! You nailed it. Your answer is spot on and helpful beyond the main problem. I see you are one of two? receivers of the 'hole-in-one' awards? This is another hole in one.
It's nice to receive a friendly and positive response. I don't use forums often. Maybe 5 times in the past 40 years of computering? and always worry that I am breaking etiquette some how lol.
