The clearos forum opens very slowly. The page opens for 40 seconds; this is not normal.

I've split your post out into a separate thread.

The forum has been painful for a couple of days now, and I am trying to get in contact with the right people to get it fixed.

Takes me about 3 - 4 attempts to actually get a response. Most of the time it's as quoted below... Beeen like this for a couple of days now form here in Australia - practically unusable. No problem reaching other sites in the US and elsewhere...

    This site can’t be reached
www.clearos.com took too long to respond.

The maintenance of the ClearOS infrastructure seems to be deteriorating. We recently had two or more recent episodes of problems with the repositories and now this. Why you hell should you be having to chase them Nick? Any decent site has good monitoring software that will alert the maintainers of a problem with an automated phone call or similar. ClearOS needs to be more pro-active and not waiting for people to bitch before thinking about doing something about it... We could be excused for thinking the ship is being abandoned - aren't the persons resposible interested enough to ensure its running OK without being prodded?

Since we are on this subject we were promised something better for the forums several years ago, still we have to use this abomination. Then months ago we were teased with possible new software. Since then nothing, nada, ничто, rien...

Update: Third attempt to post - the previous failed... 20 minutes and counting to make a post

    Same here.
The symptoms are that the (virtual) box it is running on has a load average of about 160 on a 4 core virtual machine. There are many httpd processes open. Rebooting the machine does little as the load average quickly rises back to 160. When this happened before there was a bad link not resolving and hanging all the httpd processes consuming a lot of resources. Unfortunately I know nothing about any tools to investigate httpd to see what is going on.

    Nick,

I know you are doing your very best with limited resources or support.
Apparently Sr. Management of Clear has no interest in COS of wants to invest in any support.

You know I support COS for a long time and trying to help where I can, but it is no fun any more.

Patrick, Clicking on "Community Leadership" gives me a "404 Page Not Found"

    How appropriate :)

I have had enough! New installations are NOT ClearOS - support is no longer good enough. This site is now in the third day of complete and utter uselessness.

The above doesn't refer to you Nick - you have done a sterling job over the years - the problem is higher in the chain.

Edit: For those for might contend " It's just the Community Website" the product is OK, then consider this... The help pages are links to the web-site and, for me at least, respond just as badly as the forums potentially impacting every ClearOS user.

    Tony,

The product is still very good, so not using it or stop using is not the case.
The support definitely makes the product and i think a good forum/support will help to make it a better product with community help.

It would be a shame if people from the community who has working a long time with COS and made contribution will leave.
I see it a difficult period which we have to go through.

I agree with you that leadership is far away at the moment. A response from them would be appropriate.
The commitment from Nick is undoubtable

It looks like the forum or the whole www.clearos.com is working again. I know Team India was going to try and heelp out with this one, but I don't know who did the fix, but load averages are not back to something sensible and there are only a few httpd processes running at a time and you can see the number rising and falling as people hit the site, but it is not pages of httpd processes.

True Nick, still just as slow here - just isn't timing out - not fixed at all... Seems likje no-one cares or shockingly there is absolutely no-one available capable of fixing the problem. Rediculous for a company that sells software for businesses that includes a web-server. Talk about the cobler's children having holes in their tiny shoes...

and still that Community Leadership link results in a 404 - only bright spot is it being the only item with a speedy response time :D

Patrick - IMHO any product with this sort of support is not good - got to look at the whole package. In the next few days will be wiping two more ClearOS systems for something much better...

That may have been a spike. Load averages have now fallen back to to 40-60 so I don't know what is going on. Yesterday and the day before they were at ~160 continually.

Tony, please be assured that people do care, but resources are limited at the moment.

Nick - I know you care - but there is no evidence of caring from those I would expect to see it from... Conspicuous by absence and absolute silence...

Will just add this... I am a member of a number of forums. From time to time something does go wrong. What counts is the way the issue is handled. For example on one if the forum stilll works, but is slow - an append will be made in the approriate section indicating that the problem is being looked into and updates. When fixed we get a brief technical report on what caused the error and thanking users for their patience. If the site goes down completely there is a re-direct informing the user that the site is down and to check Twitter or Facebook for updates. These updates do appear on said social media and inform users of progress and the final one indicating the site is back up. Other forums provide some form of communication for users. Enough said!

Patrick - drifting a bit OT but will answer briefly..

What package will you be using

No final decision yet. Have been a user of Redhat and distributions derived from it since 1998. Was primarily an IBM OS/2 user before that for PCs. For shares, mail, news server, dhcpd, name server etc will probaly be Fedora Server. Been impressed with their migration tool which enables a major OS version upgrade without a re-install from scratch. This workstation started life several years ago as Fedora Release 26 - it is now Fedora 30 having progressed 26 -> 27 -> 28 -> 29 -> 30. Currenly just trying distributions based in Ubuntu such as mate mint etc. The last to change will be firewalls. Suspect it will be pfSense. Used it a few years ago and really loved it. It was only that I was still working then and really didn''t have the time to get to grips with the finer nuances of BSD. Being retired now that isn't so much of a problem. pfSense is fast, reliable and secure - the reporting was brilliant. That provided by ClearOS looks really amateurish in comparison.

Seven days now since it was reported the go-slow reared its ugly head...
    As Patrick indicated

Apparently Sr. Management of Clear has no interest in COS

The Community Leadership page still gives a 404 - but of course since there is no ClearOS Leadership in management capable and willing to look after after their own web-site - it will remain as is - a slow stinking morass of decay...

Performance of www.clearos.com is really up and down at the moment. I've just logged on and it was responsive as it usually is and load averages are around 4-5. Other times I look and it goes up to ~140. Then performance is poor. When it hits ~160 as it did a few days ago, that is when it dies.

I did not mention the leadership link as it worked for me, but I was going in via the clearcenter.com site. I can see the issue at clearos.com now and have mentioned it.

Thanks Nick - that is the page I was looking for...
As for "lack of resouses" that is continually mentioned - looking at those profiles there are several people listed whose description indicates they should should be able do the job of maintaining this site. If their skills aren't high enough - there are plenty more well qualified who could be contracted.. ClearOS for some reason just doesn't fix it, for whatever reason.

Painful is correct! Tonight, January 8, 2020 at about 2135 MST, it took me:

1). To open the URL to the forum pages, 65 seconds
2). To open this thread, 70 seconds
3). To login to the forum 75 seconds
4). Get back to the forums, 70 seconds
5). Get back to this thread for a comment on the 'pain' experienced, 65 seconds
6). My guess will be to post this comment another 60 seconds at least!

Six minutes, at a minimum, to post a comment. Wow!

After this post was first received, the forum got very 'snappy' or speedy for a short while, then down the tubes.

Just an "FYI" for whatever it is worth,

Firstly, this is a worry straight of...

This site uses a deprecated version of TLS that will be disabled in March 2020. Please upgrade to TLS 1.2 or 1.3.

Time to load 3 different random community pages, look at the last one :(

    200 requests
    9.56 MB / 1.82 MB transferred
    Finish: 2.79 min
    DOMContentLoaded: 1.88 min
    load: 2.62 min

    133 requests
    5.36 MB / 961.01 KB transferred
    Finish: 2.88 min
    DOMContentLoaded: 1.92 min
    load: 2.38 min

    137 requests
    2.91 MB / 370.39 KB transferred
    Finish: 6.61 min
    DOMContentLoaded: 5.83 min
    load: 6.31 min

With some pages have hundreds of css warnings of various types, clearos scripts being terminated by timeouts (/media/jui/js/jquery.min.xxxxxxx being the source of many at clearos) etc - just gave up any further investigation.

The site also supports TLS1.2. If support were removed for TLS 1.0 and 1.1, all you'd do is lock out people with old browsers. Anyone with an up to date browser will negotiate TLS 1.2. AFAIK the current ClearOS/CentOS version of apache, httpd-2.4.6-90.el7.centos.x86_64, does not support TLS 1.3.

But the forum performance is still dire. I had to restart apache even to get the SSL Labs test to complete.

TLS 1.0/1.1 was deprecated starting October 31st, 2018. TLS 1.2 was released back in 2008! Why does ClearOS feel the need to continue with something that is proven insure. In fact those with old browsers have more problems than accessing ClearOS. Starting June 30, 2018, websites stopped supporting TLS 1.0 to remain PCI compliant. PCI (Payment Card Industry) is the industry standard for Credit and similar card transactions. The time for 1.0 and 1.1 to die was 2018. A survey by Microsoft showed that less than one percent of daily connections on Oct 15 2018 were using TLS 1.0 or 1.1.

Much more likely ClearOS still supports TLS 1.0/1.1 because ClearOS does not maintain its Website. This ongoing slowness is a disgrace - 10 days and counting... and still no apology from a ClearOS exec. Loyalty should work both ways - community users providing help, testing, suggestions etc to ClearOS and fellow Community users; while ClearOS provides a suitable maintained platform for this to occur, instead we get a virtual kick in the teeth and ignored.

Rebooting does not seem to help. I have done so in the past. To run the SSLabs tests this morning I had to restart apache and even then the load averages quickly rocketed back up so it gives only brief respite. Oddly, an hour and a half ago the load averages dropped to the lowest I've ever seen, but they're back up again.

The good news is that they appear to be about to stand up another server and rebuild the site. Work started today. I have no idea about time scales.

    Hi all,
In order to fix the site speed, all the ClearOS documentation has been pulled off onto another subdomain and redirects have been put in place. If you find any broken links, then please let me know. Also, if you see any serious formatting problems such as in the Active Directory Connector Troubleshooting page, again, please post here.

Funny, I'm now on Windows 10 using the Chrome browser. The ClearOS forums are more responsive as on MacOS (Safari). When I'm on MacOS (Safari) there is a 1-3 seconds delay before a forum post loads. It is still much faster as before the documentation move. On Windows 10 (Chrome) the forum loads instantly.

    Edit:

1 min 14 secs - rediculous... but then again ClearOS haven't put any effort for ages in doing really anything positive for these forums. Took weeks to fix last time they broke. There was an attempt to move to a different platform, but that seems to have withered and died ages ago.
