Hello everyone,

After a power outage I initially had some trouble booting my COS gateway box, but this is a known issue.
After it eventually booted normally with the latest kernel, I saw the following error message on the Firewall page:
Firewall is in panic mode! If your system is in gateway mode, no traffic will be routed and all firewall rules are disabled. Webconfig (port 81) and SSH (port 22) have been allowed to provide access to the server to help you resolve the issue. If you just added a firewall rule, try removing it or view the system log file for details on what went wrong.

I had to connect my workstation directly to the router to be able to write this.
I tried the following to solve it:
Restore a backup from the day before.
Added a new rule to the firewall and removed it again.
Attempted to search the logs, but I would not know where to start.

Please assist,

John

Ps.
This is when the problem started (system log):

From firewall.conf, it was only the bit you've removed that I was interested in, but I don't think it matters. You have some fundamental issue during boot. Have a look at your boot.log, dmesg log and your messages log while booting for errors.

In the case of system corruption, is it feasible to do a reinstall?

Very strange because it is barfing at a routine to delete all chains and from then on. Can you try starting the firewall in debug mode with a "firewall-start -d" and post the output. Also can you post the contents of /etc/clearos/network.conf and /etc/clearos/firewall.conf?

    Thanks for your quick response.
Here is the output you requested:

Thanks for responding, but I don't have time right now.
I will send you the contents of firewall.conf in a personal message in a few.
The rest will have to wait until tomorrow morning.

No need for firewall.conf. The problem is more fundamental.

Isn't there a simpler way too solve this issue ... ?!?
I was thinking about making screenshots of the firewall rules.
Clearing the firewall to factory settings.
    Manually add all the rules.

Anyway, I don't know what you mean by having a look at my boot.log, dmesg log and my messages log while booting for errors.
I have no experience with log files and at the moment I refuse to reboot, because it can take a sometimes 20 times before it boots up again.
This problem has always been there, even after I changed HD's and did a full reinstall.

A reinstall is not an option, because it would not solve the boot issues and I would lose a lot of data that I cannot backup on another disk right now.

I don't see anything particularly sensitive in firewall.conf and I don't see any obvious fault with it. You are welcome to try clearing the rules but I am 99.99% certain it will achieve nothing. You appear to have a problem with iptables not being initialised even before rules are applied. What do you get from:
    lsmod | grep ipt
Have you tried booting of an older kernel since it may the kernel modules not loading?

I have asked you to look at /var/log/messages during boot (in other words not the whole log, just the section during boot), /var/log/boot.log and /var/log/dmesg (if you have one) as you are probably getting a failure during boot with some modules not loading.

    lsmod | grep ipt
    "No feedback"

Yesterday i tried booting all the kernels I have several times (back to 7.2), but with the same result.
I kept attempting to boot from the latest kernel until it finally worked. Normally I don't reboot my COS box.

I would not know how to look at log files during boot, but I told you that I have no experience with that.
Rebooting is not an option unless absolutely required, but I refuse to reboot 20 or more times for no reason.

You have not rebooted today and the logs have rotated so there is nothing useful in the messages log. You need to look at last week's messages log and, please, only the section during your last boot.

Also try "modprobe ip_tables" and see if that allows the firewall to restart.

Sry for the late response, but I decided to make a proper backup and start with a clean install.
Not in the mood to make all sorts of minor changes that will not fix much, because I don't have a clue how to fix problems with the iptables.

    Closing this case,

    John

    Ps.
I successfully reinstalled COS and now I have Internet on my network again.

I know you didn't want to do it but you had a corrupt system which would only boot 1 out of 20 times. Troubleshooting it would have been difficult at best. You've made the right decision.

I received this error message when I attempted to attach .txt files, so I had to post it here:
