I just ordered a mini pc (Qotom) to have a hand at a homebrew router. While I wait to receive it (from China) I have been researching and trying to pick the right operating system. The mini pc I purchased has a wifi card, so I would like it to also function as a wifi access point.

Question1:
Will ClearOS detect and allow me to broadcast wifi?

Question2:
Does ClearOS support UPnP to allow for multiplayer gaming?

If you have any advice I'd very much appreciate it.

@moderators: I wasn't sure where to post, if this section is incorrect, please move it to the appropriate section.

Thank you both! Looks like I'll be receiving my mini pc earlier than I expected (should be here by Wednesday the 3rd), so I'll give ClearOS a shot and post an update after. Glad to see there is a great community here happy to help newbies. :)

Unfortunately ClearOS discontinued the miniupnp app. You can install it yourself form elsewhere but you'd also have to configure it yourself. From memory it is not too difficult to do for your own environment but more difficult to do generically as you'll probably get away with hard-coded interface names.

For WiFi there is the app-wireless that Shaun linked to. It is relatively basic and only allows you to configure 802.11g (and perhaps b) and your PSK and channel. If you want 802.11n or 802.11ac you'll have to manually edit hostapd.conf.

There are some generic Linux limitations. The WiFi NIC must be able to support AP mode (also known as Master mode), and the drivers need to be available in ClearOS. Some are available, others are not. ElRepo is another source of drivers and I can compile them if necessary.

Another issue is that a your server may not be in the best location to give WiFi coverage to your premises so it is generally recommended to use a dedicated AP instead. This can be an old router with DHCP disabled and a wired connection to its LAN port, but this does not mean you can't go down the ClearOS route.

Even if you read about it, don't try bridging your WiFi NIC and your LAN NIC until you have both running independently.
