I've been trying to setup ClearOS on my HPE ProLiant Microserver Gen 10. Originally I was stuck on the installation wizard during the DNS configuration stage when it would refuse any DNS server I would throw at it. I managed to skip it somehow but still am not able to set a working DNS server.

I've tried the default gateway and public DNS (Google's, 1.1.1.1, 9.9.9.9) but none of them seem to work from ClearOS.

The other machines on the network use Google's DNS just fine.

What IP addresses do you have on your WAN and LAN interfaces?
What have you configured as your DNS servers?
Do you have internet access? Can you ping 8.8.8.8?
    What is the output of:
    lspci -k | grep Eth -A 3
If you see the RTL8111/8168/8411 NIC you need to update the drivers to the r8186 with a:
    yum install kmod-r816*
Then reboot, but you will have difficulty without DNS.

Just reboot after setting the external lan interface ip address and gateway + dns (shell-reboot)

That almost suggests you don't have internet access. Have you by any chance configured your LAN and WAN on the same subnet?
