Hi All Experts!!

Pardon me for being Naive.. I stumbled onto this amazing Forum while looking for a solution to a typical (well typical for me) issue I face at my home DSL WLAN. I need to deny any hotspot (Windows Generic, Connectify, Virtual Router Manager etc) creation on my DSL Access Point at Home. I have given access to one of my friend with the intension she only uses it for herself .. but she is giving access to others using her PC as a hotspot.. This is greatly affecting my Internet speed.. I sometimes struggle to open a web page.. I have blocked their MAC addresses in my Router filter, but that doesn't seem to work may be because they use her PC as hotspot..

I know it might seem very unimportant and amateurish as compared to wat you usually encounter.. but it matters a lot to me!! The pblm is that I can't stop access to my friend (That was the easiest way off course!!). But, I hope to receive some work-around to stop her hotspot mess from this expert group..

PS: I tried IP based Access list filtering but didn't work.. I am sure I must hv done it wrong!! [I figured HOTSPOTS use 192.168.248.X] Maybe!!

:( Be waiting!!

You may have to do some research on this, but I think you can add a firewall rule matching on the ttl in her packets. I think all packets originating from her PC will have a certain ttl. Packets passed through her PC may have a different one (it would be lower if it were the same OS or possibly any OS) - I don't know know enough about it, but it is an idea. The aim would be to block any packets from her IP with a ttl indicating the packet did not originate from her PC

The other thing would be to check out the QoS and Bandwidth modules which you could use just to either throttle her bandwidth or guarantee you a certain amount.

You won't be able to filter her hotspot IP's as you'll never see them. You'll only see her IP.
