Hi All

I have recently upgraded my internet connection from a 4Mbps to a 100Mbps connection.
What i saw was that my internet connection was very inconsistent and "slow". Doing speed test and large file download test from Hetznew gave me inconsistent results and the speed was never more than 20 to 30 Mbps.

I then connected my DELL laptop direct to my connection before my ClearOS gateway and... 97.8Mbps up and down every time.

Did some research and it seems that the Intel e1000 driver has some issues, according to ClearOS forum.
What i did find strange is that the same driver on my LAN side works like a charm.
I can transfer large files from my desktop to my ClearOS box at 115MBps - 920Mbps without any issue.

So i took a DELL R210 i have and set that up as a ClearOS Gateway, and i have similar issues, the speed is higher, i now get about 80Mbps up and down, but not the 97.8 I get when i bypass the COS unit.
On the LAN side, file transfer is 118MBps - 950Mbps

Is this a "Gateway" issue and i must just live with it or am i missing something,?
Will this get worse if my internet connection speed increase in the future?

    Hi Nick

That is not the LAN speed. That is speed from my proper LAN through a microserver in gateway mode to the LAN behind the microserver. It is the closest I can get to emulating a 1Gbps internet connection, and I was managing 600Mbps. It would probably go faster if I disabled the laptop virus checker. I've done that before and hit near-gigabit speeds **through** a ClearOS gateway.

    Hi Nick

Yes, in Gateway mode, my LAN speed was always good, between 80 and 115kBps, it has been the WAN side that was slow i could only get about 40Mbps download on the WAN side.
Both ports tested in LAN mode now give me about 920Mbps, so i am not sure how to move forward.

At the moment i have a small DELL R210 setup as a Gateway and my Media Server is on the LAN side of that.
With the DELL R210, i am getting about 97Mbps on a 100Mbps connection.
The difference is that the DELL R210 is a Gateway only, on my media server i have PLEX, Samba and Transmission

I'm afraid I can't replicate. I can only test internally. I have a microserver on my LAN in gateway mode and I can download from my server to a laptop behind the microserver at over 70MB/s and that is when WIndows has just booted up and is still sorting itself out.

    Hi Nick

I have some more update on this.
I have made my Media Server a "Standalone" server, with Firewall, and now the network speed is significantly higher.
My server is a Intel Server S3420GP with a Xeon 3400 and 16GB of RAM

I have tested this on both network ports and i am getting similar speeds on both ports.
I have uploaded and download a 6GB file and i am getting speed of around 115kBps (920 Mbps)
This show me that in "Gateway" mode the WAN network speed is restricted for some reason.

I also had LAN issues during raid rebuild and that has also now "disappeared" as i get 115kBps even during a raid rebuild, before i could only get about 30 to 40kBps during this process.

So it seems that when in "Gateway" mode, ClearOS does something to the network and make everything SLOW...

    Hi Nick

    ethtool report:
    Speed: 1000Mb/s
    Duplex: Full

I have a few dropped packets on my LAN side, but zero on the WAN side.
New cable, that was my 1st port of call. Replaced my CAT5e cable with a CAT6 shielded cable, no change

What speed do you see from:
    ethtool {your_WAN_interface}
and do you see any errors with:
    ifconfig {your_WAN_interface}
Have you tried changing your WAN cable?

    Hi Nick

Unfortunately i am not able to add an a network adapter in this unit as i have already used the spare slots for additional SATA cards.
The Motherboard is a Intel Server Board - S3420GP with 2x onboard NIC's.
I have 12x SATA drives in this unit.

The reason i am pointing the finger at ClearOS, i might be wrong, is that on the LAN port i can transfer files at close to 1Gbps, but on the WAN port i struggle to get 30Mbps.
I even :Swapped" the ports, use the WAN as LAN and LAN as WAN, and the speed issue stay on the WAN side.
Both ports use the same driver. Or am i missing something?

You should be able to do better than that with ClearOS. e1000 adaptors are PCI rather than PCI-E so are getting a bit long in the tooth. Are you able to change the adaptor? I have a Gen 10 Microserver on my LAN (so not particularly powerful) and it can download from my ClearOS gateway at the full 1Gbps. It does not require a lot of horsepower these days to run a 1Gbps Ethernet connection.

    Hi Nick

No proxy, no Qos and i use COS in Gateway mode.
Lan is static IP and LAN is also the DHCP for my network.
WAN is static IP from ISP.
Not PPPoE, as i don't have ADSL anymore, 100Mbps fibre with static IP from ISP

Are you using QoS or the proxy? How are you connecting to your ClearOS to your gateway? DHCP, Static or PPPoE?
