ClearOS Feature Request

ClearOS and NAS

I currently have ClearOS Busines up and running just great. I am now looking into Network Attached Storage as some of my software that I use like the HDHomeRun can access a NAS device. My XBOX ONE can do that too. So my question is:

Is there an app or setup configuration that can look at a FlexShare as a NAS? OR do I need a separate Server like FreeNAS to realize this? I am still learning a lot about linux and do like what I see. Just not completely familiar yet with NAS. I do like the fact that I can add storage to the NAS to expand it as my needs growm.

Thank you for any advice you can give.

I am not sure where you are coming from here.

ClearOS is effectively a NAS and any attached device should be able to access the flexshares (and user shares) as Samba shares. I do something similar with Kodi running on a Pi (.... although I also run Plex. There was a reason for switching but I can't remember it). If you use the Storage Manager app it is relatively easy to add more space/drives. If you use the LVM (I think the default installation does but I avoid it for the base installation as it introduces a layer of complexity if you get a drive issue) it is simple to add more drives/space without having to think about what you want to go where. Or you could use the LVM with the Storage Manager just for flexshares.

If you want to use a remote NAS and configure a Flexshare to use it, this should also be possible but you'll have to do some command line stuff. I am now talking theoretically as I've never done or tried it. In theory, if your NAS supports it, you can mount the NAS drive as an iSCSI target in ClearOS then use a custom flexshare location to map the flexshare into wherever you've mounted your NAS drive (or you could mount the iSCSI drive directly into the flexshare, or mount it into its own location and maount and bind it into the flexshare location - there are lots of possibilities). Alternatively you can mount a NAS samba share into ClearOS instead of using iSCSI. I am not sure how you manage users with this type of set up.

I think Marcel has done some things like this using ClearOS and remote storage.
