I am new on ClearOS and I would like to set ClearOS up as a Gateway.

Modem[static-IP] (Bridge-Mode)
-----> ClearOS (Gateway-Mode w. FIREWALL, DNS, DHCP, PROXY)
---------> LAN
---------> DMZ (ftp-, web-, mail-servers)

I have got a static IP from my ISP and I would like to change the default reverse DNS (given from my ISP) to my own domainname -> eg. "gateway.domain.com"

When I do the installation of Clear OS 7.1 I get asked to set a hostname for ClearOS - must this hostname be the same as the name for the reverse DNS (I think YES because its the host which getting the public IP).

Am I right? I hope somebody can help me with that. Thank you!

    Which domain do you use for the local clients? also your public domain or do you use something else? eg domain.local or domain.lan? what would be the best solution?
    Quote was from PM

    I use my public domain as my local domain, but there is no requirement to do so and when I started out I did not. It leaves me with the anomaly that my cacert is from howitts.lan and I now use howitts.co.uk. I may change this one day when I become more confident with certificates. I guess if I use a different internal and external domain then the hostname and internet hostname would be different. I wish the docs would clarify what they are used for. The internet hostname may be used for your smtp server iirc.

    The setting does not have to be the same as the reverse DNS, which for a dynamic IP, is controlled by the ISP. On mine I use the same domain name externally and internally as in mymachine.mydomain.com. If you own your own domain name you can set a CNAME record for mymachine.mydomain.com pointing to mydomain.com.

    I do wish ClearOS would clarify the use of Hostname and Internet Hostname. Their documentation makes no mention of Internet Hostname at all.
